The Suzhou He ( Chinese 蘇州 河 / 苏州 河 , Pinyin Sūzhōu Hé , W.-G. Su-chou-ho , English Suzhou River ), also known as Wusong Jiang ( 吳淞 江 / 吴淞 江 , Wúsōng Jiāng , English Wusong River ) , is a river in eastern China that flows through downtown Shanghai .
It is named after the city of Suzhou in the neighboring province of Jiangsu , which was the most important city in this part of China before the economic rise of Shanghai. It was known as the dirtiest river in China since the 1920s.
The Suzhou is one of the outflows of the Tai Hus , the third largest freshwater lake in China, and has a length of 125 km, of which 54 km are within the administrative area of Shanghai and 24 km in the actual city area. The river flows into the Huangpu Jiang at the northern end of the Bund .
Trivia
In the Chinese film Suzhou River by director Lou Ye , the river and the city of Shanghai are the central motifs of a tragic love story.
