history

Beginning

The company was in 1832 as Jardine, Matheson & Co. founded. It was founded in Canton on July 1, 1832, following a meeting between William Jardine and the Scottish trader James Matheson from Sutherland. In 1834, the couple sent the first private shipload of Chinese tea to England. Furthermore, the company traded in silk in those years , which it shipped to England and transported opium to China on the way back ( China trade ). When the Chinese government confiscated shiploads of opium from the company, the company turned to the British government for help. Among other things, this led to the Opium War in China in 1839 , which forced China to tolerate the import of opium.
