Confucius (original title: Chinese  孔子 , Pinyin Kǒngzǐ , English title: English Confucius ) is a biopic about the Chinese philosopher Confucius . The film was directed by Hu Mei . The film was released in China on January 28, 2010 and was released on July 18, 2011 in Germany on DVD and Blu-Ray . The rental version was released on June 3rd.

action

In the Kingdom of Lu , power is divided between the three noble families Jishi, Shushi and Mengshi. The King of Lu decides to appoint the talented Mayor Kong Qiu as the new Minister of Justice. As a close advisor to the king, he succeeds in abolishing the ritual of living grave goods. Furthermore, he achieved the return of three cities through the kingdom of Qi without a fight. He is promoted to Minister of the Interior. However, some members of the three noble families are suspicious of Kong Qiu, which is why he has to leave the kingdom of Lu and his family.

Accompanied by his students, he travels through various Chinese empires and teaches his philosophies there. When Lu is attacked by Qi, the Chancellor of Lu Kong has Qiu ask for permission to release his disciple Ran You as general. Kong Qiu lets him go. After Lu wins the battle, the Chancellor decides to let Kong Qiu return to his homeland. He dies in the capital Qufu .

production

Production began in March 2009 in Hebei Province, China, and at Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang . The budget was 22 million dollars .

Faye Wong sang the theme song for the film. Her song with the title "Yōu Lán Cāo" (" 幽蘭 操  /  幽兰 操 ") is based on the ancient works of Han Yu .

reception

Christin Hoffmann from the film magazine Cinema gave the film four out of five points and described it as an “opulently equipped historical film”. The only drawback is the CGI effects.
