Rental version

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In contrast to the purchase version, a rental version is a data carrier specially produced for media rental in video stores (formerly video cassettes , now mainly DVD and Blu-ray ). It is therefore a form of product differentiation . The rental in video stores is part of the film exploitation chain .

Rental versions are sometimes published before the purchase version (so-called rental window , also called rental window , varies from one week to a maximum of three months, depending on the rental company). If the rental and purchase versions are released at the same time, this is known as direct marketing .

Rental versions differ significantly from purchase versions. Typical possible differences are:

  • lower selling price
  • more trailers
  • less bonus material
  • fewer audio tracks / languages
  • Lack of a turnaround Covers
  • different cover design
  • different cut version with possibly different age rating

Rental versions can also be purchased by end customers. In online shops , rental versions are sometimes not clearly marked, but can only be identified as such via the European Article Number .
