Traditional festivals

The Tin Hau Temples are typical religious sites in the coastal areas of Hong Kong, China and other Southeast Asian coastal regions with Chinese residents. It is believed that Tin Hau , a Daoist goddess who is often revered as the “patron saint of the sea” by residents of the coastal region, is supposed to ensure good weather and full nets for fishermen and seafarers. There are two Tin Hau temples on the island, one each in Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, both of which were built in 1826.

The Tin Hau Festival ( 天后 寶 誕  /  天后 宝 诞 , Tiānhòu Bǎodàn , Jyutping Tin 1 hau 6 Bou 2 daan 3  - literally Tin House birthday ”), which takes place every year on the 23rd of the 3rd month in the lunar calendar takes place, is celebrated by the locals and the fishermen of Lamma Island.
