Kiepenkerl
Kiepenkerle were called traveling traders in the Low German-speaking area between Sauerland and Hamburg , who belonged to the traveling people . They brought food such as eggs, dairy products and poultry to the cities in return for providing the rural areas with salt, other goods and news. German traders who crossed the border to the neighboring Netherlands in this form were called Kiepkerel , in the north also Kiepkerl . On the Lower Rhine there is the name Kiependräger .
The name is derived from the Kiepe , a back carrier made of wood and wickerwork, with which the Kiepenkerle walked across the country to sell the goods that were in and around the Kiepe to the local population.
Since the 19th century, the typical traditional costume of the Kiepenkerle in Westphalia and the Lower Rhine has included a white shirt , a black neck tie or a colorful, often red neckerchief , a vest and a blue, knee-length linen smock as protective clothing (Kiel ) or a jacket , knee breeches or long trousers made of linen or cloth , wooden shoes (Holsken) or leather shoes with stockings and high gaiters , a high or flat peaked cap (Kipp), tobacco pipe (Mutz) and a walking stick (Krückmann).
Among them were by no means only men, but also women like Kiepenlisettken from Schalksmühle .
Today the Kiepenkerle play a role primarily in the context of folklore and tourism , for example as city or museum guides. This custom is particularly widespread in the Münsterland . Traditionally, a Kiepenkerl also plays the role of Buern in the Singspiel O Buer, what is the cost of your hot? , which is an important part of Lambertus singing .
