The box is a carrying device. It is a basket often made of willow rods or similar material with a round, D-shaped or square base.

If the box only has a handle, it can be carried by one or two people. If the box is equipped with carrying straps, it is carried on the back.

In parts of the Rhineland it is called Hotte . In Bavarian it is called a pumpkin . The basket maker who Kürben produce and other basketry are therefore in Bavaria Kürbenzäuner called. In Switzerland the Kiepe is called Chräze , Hutte , Chrenze or Tanse .

The box used to be used to transport household goods , hay, wood, pine apples and other materials or objects. In the vintage hand-find (now usually made of plastic) Kiepen ( handmade paper ) use. Otherwise, the box is no longer in use and is only rarely manufactured and used. Today's counterpart is the hiking backpack .

Mainly in the Westphalian-speaking area, the (mostly male) belly is called a Kiepe; in pregnancy also the female.

Likewise with Kiepe also a laundry basket are referred to, a product manufactured by industrial plastic storage object. For clarity is such a Kiepe redundantly also called plastic Kiepe. Especially with the plastic box, the basic rectangular shape (bottom) is often characterized by a diamond pattern.
