Kiepenkerl (Munster)
The Kiepenkerl is a monument and landmark at the Spiekerhof in Münster with the representation of a Kiepenkerl .
history
The beautification association of the city of Münster commissioned the sculptor August Schmiemann to create a Kiepenkerl monument. For the amount of 2960 marks, he created a 1.75 m high plaster statue, which was inaugurated on October 16, 1896. The memorial survived the bombing raids on the city on October 10, 1943. Therefore, the National Socialist propaganda used the monument in 1944 as a template for a propaganda poster with the inscription "Nevertheless and still - Wi staoht almost!" A decorative statue was raised to a new meta- level. When the US Army marched in, the statue was destroyed by a tank.
The low German stage Muenster in Muenster initiated immediately after the war a competition for new construction. The new designs were not approved by Mayor Karl Zuhorn . At the request of the sculptor Albert Mazzotti junior , the city administration commissioned him and his colleague Heinrich Ostlinnig to recreate the statue from cast bronze true to the original. On the occasion of the 20th German Farmers' Day , the statue was inaugurated on September 20, 1953 by the then Federal President Theodor Heuss . The two surrounding restaurants are called Großer Kiepenkerl and Kleiner Kiepenkerl .
On April 7, 2018, the rampage occurred here in Münster .
In Washington, DC there is a copy of the Kiepenkerl memorial in Munster, made of stainless steel by Jeff Koons on the occasion of the Sculpture.Projects 1987. It can be seen as an exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
