Karl Zuhorn

Karl Zuhorn (born January 18, 1887 in Kamen ; † August 2, 1967 in Münster ) was a German politician ( center , later CDU ).

Life

After graduating from high school Laurentianum in Warendorf , he studied law and political science from 1905 to 1908 and received his doctorate with a thesis on "The civil servants, employees and workers of the Imperial Shipyard in Kiel until the November Revolution 1918". jur. After working in the judiciary in 1920, he embarked on an administrative career and from 1922 to 1932 was regional councilor and cultural department at the provincial association of the Prussian province of Westphalia . In 1933 he became a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia and of the Provincial Committee. In 1931 he was elected Lord Mayor of Münster, but as a center member he was dismissed by the National Socialists on May 19, 1933. Zuhorn was retired between 1933 and 1935. From 1935 to 1945 he was a member of the municipal examination office of the government in Düsseldorf.

After the Second World War , he was reinstated as Lord Mayor on June 15, 1945 by the military government. On April 24, 1946, the election of the City Director of Münster took place with 32 of 33 votes . Zuhorn held this post until his retirement on October 1, 1952, and was succeeded by Heinrich Austermann .

During his political career, Zuhorn worked to ensure the importance of the former provincial capital as an administrative, cultural and scientific center in Westphalia. The establishment of the Higher Administrative Court for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Münster is largely due to Zuhorn . In 1932 Zuhorn became a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . In 1949 he was elected to the board of the commission, in 1965 he was elected honorary member. Between 1951 and 1963 he was the director of the Association for History and Archeology of Westphalia, Department of Münster .

Zuhorn was also a member of the executive committee of the German Association of Cities and the chairman of its cultural committee. He was also chairman of the legal and constitutional committee of the North Rhine-Westphalia City Council.

The Karl Zuhorn Prize awarded by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe is named after him .
