Culture

religion

The Roman Catholic parish church is St. Martin's Church . Together with St. Ludgerus (Albersloh) it now forms the Catholic parish of St. Martinus and Ludgerus Sendenhost and Albersloh in the diocese of Münster .

The church of the Evangelical parish of Sendenhorst for Sendenhorst and Vorhelm is the Friedenskirche (south gate 16). It was inaugurated in 1952 as a "diaspora emergency church" after the number of parishioners had increased sharply due to the influx of evangelical refugees after World War II . In 1969 the church was enlarged by an extension. Albersloh belongs to the Wolbeck parish .

theatre

The theater group “Dröget Schnüffelken” puts on a play in Low German (Plattdütscher) dialect every January.

movie theater

In the 1950s / 60s there were two movie theaters in Sendenhorst. The Losto Theater, today the Volksbank extension, later moved to the west gate (today the Red Cross). The old cinema was then operated as the central theater .

Attractions

The sculptor and honorary citizen Bernhard Kleinhans, who was born in Sendenhorst, left behind many of his works of art, mostly made of bronze, in the public space of the town center. Taken together , the 21 works result in a sculpture trail , which was documented in the brochure Bernhard Kleinhans - A tour through Sendenhorst published by the city .

Economy and Infrastructure

The city, classified as a basic center in regional planning, is shaped by agriculture and in the Sendenhorst district by the settlement of companies from the plastics processing industry. Strong economic ties have existed with the Münster regional center for decades.

Known companies

VEKA AG , headquartered in Sendenhorst, is one of the world market leaders in the production of plastic profiles for windows, doors, roller shutters and plastic sheets. With almost 1000 employees at the Sendenhorst location (as of January 2007), the family business is the most important employer in the area. Verkehrsbetriebe Bils GmbH , one of the main pillars of Netinera's expansion in North Rhine-Westphalia, is based in Sendenhorst.

education

In terms of educational institutions, Sendenhorst has a primary school in each of the two districts and a secondary school (church-sponsored) in the Sendenhorst district. Gymnasiums and other secondary schools are visited in the neighboring cities of Ahlen and Münster. On September 4, 2013, a Montessori secondary school started operating in Sendenhorst (today: Montessori comprehensive school).

health

With the St.-Josef-Stift (since 1889) the city of Sendenhorst has an important and nationwide well-known institution in the field of health care (Orthopedic Center and Northwest German Rheumatism Center). The hospitals in Münster and Ahlen are responsible for general medical care.

traffic

Rail transport

Sendenhorst is on the Münster – Warstein railway , which is owned by the Westphalian State Railroad (WLE) . At the moment, only freight trains run regularly here. A reactivation for passenger traffic in the section Münster – Sendenhorst has been planned for a long time. However, it is currently in competition with the Harsewinkel – Gütersloh – Verl route . The costs for the necessary modernization should amount to 32.3 million euros, the current subsidy 3.5 to 3.9 million euros per year. A study is based on 6260 passengers per day. A 20-minute cycle should be offered during rush hour, and 20/40-minute cycles during off-peak hours. In September 2015, the project was still in the preliminary draft phase, with the possible cost being given as “around 40 million”. On July 3, 2019, the Transport Committee of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia unanimously voted for the route to be included in the state's requirement plan for local public transport.

A lower benefit-cost factor was determined for the further route to Neubeckum. An extension to the central center of Beckum is not planned for the time being due to a new flyover structure or a level crossing of all four tracks of the main line Hamm – Minden and the associated capacity restrictions.

The city has a 1.76% stake in Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn GmbH.

Road traffic

The bypass has been planned since the 1950s. At the beginning of 2013, the plans became more specific, so that construction of the northern bypass can be expected in the 2010s.

Intercontinental airport

With the planned Westphalia Airport , Sendenhorst would have been integrated into a much larger traffic concept in the early 1970s. A major airport was planned between Sendenhorst, Albersloh and Drensteinfurt. In the final stage, the airport would have had 5 runways. The costs amounted to an estimated DM 1.1 billion. The planning was discontinued in 1973, the reason for the failure was the objection of the federal government and the low flight lanes of the British, who at that time still had occupation rights in Germany.

Sports

Popular sport is primarily carried out by the 12 departments of SG Sendenhorst 1910 e. V. covered. The riding and driving club Sendenhorst is active in the field of equestrian sports.

A swing golf course has existed since 2008 . For this sport, the Münsterland is a priority area within Europe.
