Martin Happe
Martin Albert Happe MAfr (born November 15, 1945 in Sendenhorst ) is a Catholic priest and Bishop of Nouakchott in Mauritania .
Life
Born in Münsterland, Happe joined the order of Africa missionaries (“ White Fathers ”). After his ordination on June 2, 1973 in the parish church of St. Martin in Sendenhorst, he worked as a missionary and as a priest in the diocese of Mopti in Mali . Most recently he was apostolic administrator of the Mopti diocese.
Pope John Paul II named Martin Happe Bishop of Nouakchott in Mauritania in 1995. He received his episcopal consecration on July 10, 1995 in the St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster, the Münster bishop Reinhard Lettmann ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor in Nouakchott, Bishop Robert de Boissonneaux de Chevigny CSsp , and Jean Zerbo , Bishop of Mopti in Mali.
Act
The Catholic Church in Mauritania mainly takes care of charitable projects. Bishop Happe, who is responsible for 12 priests and around 30 nuns, has made the main task of looking after African refugees, who are also given asylum in the churches of Mauritania, for example, and the burial of drowned boat people , whose bodies are washed up on Mauritania's coasts. Happe vehemently advocates a more liberal border policy for the EU .
In 2009 he was awarded the Bernhard Kleinhans plaque for his social commitment, his impartial stance on Islam and his work for migrants and their survivors; Rupert Neudeck gave the laudatory speech .
