Industrial monument

As an important testimony to the industrial culture of the late Wilhelminian era, the Old Gasometer is both a sight and a popular event location in Zwickau . The cultural offerings range from concerts to theater performances, variety shows, cabaret, conferences and readings through to cinema programs. The modern hall offers 300 seats. The current gasometer was conceived as an urban property with the aim of using it as a peace and meeting center that reaches and actively involves many people of different ages, origins, views of life and beliefs.

history

Construction began in 1874 and was completed in 1875. As Gasometer C, the gasometer was the third and largest gasometer on the gas station premises . The volume of the structure, which was built according to the bell principle, was 3000 m³. In the brick rotunda was a bell that was open at the bottom and when it was fully filled it was extended to the top. There was a 75 cm wide gap between the wall and the gas bell, which was filled with water and, in the winter months, with alcohol. The gas was produced from hard coal and coke, tar and ammonia water were marketed as by-products. Gas was stored at this location until 1900. After the shutdown, the gasometer was only used as a storage room. This was followed by a conceptual phase for the preservation and use of the industrial monument . On October 29, 1998, the Zwickau city council decided to expand the property. The renovation and furnishing of the property was made possible with funds from the European Structural Fund (URBAN) and funds from the funding program for the protection of urban monuments from the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Saxony and the City of Zwickau. In Zwickau , in addition to the gasometer, the complex around the Johannisbad and the old town houses from the Wilhelminian era in the northern suburbs are part of the development area.
