Emmy Rossum (2011)

Emmanuelle Gray "Emmy" Rossum (born September 12, 1986 in New York City ) is an American singer , actress and director . She became known worldwide with the films The Day After Tomorrow and The Phantom of the Opera in 2004.

Life

Childhood and youth

Emmy Rossum was born in New York to a Jewish family. She has no siblings. Her father is a banker , her mother a photographer . When she was three years old, her parents divorced. The relationship with the father was then not very close. At the age of seven, Rossum joined the children's choir of the Metropolitan Opera on the recommendation of her kindergarten teacher .

She went to Spence School in Manhattan until the teachers gave her an ultimatum due to her frequent absenteeism: Either she would focus on her school career and post her career, or she would have to leave school. Rossum chose the latter and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with her high school degree online .

Career

As a child, Emmy Rossum appeared in over 50 operas at the Metropolitan Opera , including Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades and Carmen , directed by Franco Zeffirelli . She sang with Plácido Domingo , Luciano Pavarotti , Dolly Parton and others. Her acting career began with television shows such as Law & Order (1997), Young and Passionate - How Life Played (1999), and The Practice (2001). She also played the young Audrey Hepburn in the Audrey Hepburn Story , with Jennifer Love Hewitt (2000).

Since then, Rossum has appeared in various films, e.g. B. Songcatcher (2000), It Had to Be You (2000), Mystic River (2003) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). In the latter, she played Jake Gyllenhaal's friend .

Rossum celebrated her international breakthrough in December 2004 in the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera , a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber 's musical of the same name . At the side of Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson she shot when she was 17 and sang her vocal parts herself. This earned her a number of awards, prizes and a Golden Globe nomination. Rossum had never seen the stage version of the musical before and was therefore able to approach the role with an open mind. Only after filming did she watch a performance. For the role she found out about various things such as Degas ' paintings in the Musee d'Orsay (to be able to assume the posture of a ballerina) or spiritual contact with the deceased (to improve Christine's relationship with her dead father and the "angel of music") to be able to understand).

In Poseidon , a film by Wolfgang Petersen , she played the daughter of Kurt Russell . The film, which opened in cinemas on May 12, 2006, received rather mixed reviews and was not very successful commercially. She appeared on stage in Williamstown as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet .

After Rossum had received several offers for record contracts and music albums due to her success with The Phantom of the Opera , she recorded an album called Inside Out for Geffen Records over a longer period of time . It was released on October 23, 2007. Since 2011 she can be seen alongside William H. Macy in the US adaptation of the successful British series Shameless . In August 2018, it was announced that she would be leaving the series after nine seasons. In March 2012 she was cast in the literary film adaptation of Beautiful Creatures .

At the end of January 2013 she released her second album "Sentimental Journey".

In 2016 she made her directorial debut with the production of an episode of Shameless . The following year she directed the series again. In 2019 she shot an episode of the Modern Love series .

Personal

Emmy Rossum lives with her mother in Manhattan . From 2004 to 2005 she had a relationship with David Wildenstein, a member of the millionaire Wildenstein family. In February 2008 she married the music producer Justin Siegel. The marriage lasted a year and a half and in September 2009 Rossum filed for divorce. Rossum is married to screenwriter and director Sam Esmail , whom she met on the set of his film Comet in 2013 .

In 2007, Rossum became the advertising personality for The Body Shop .

Rossum is currently studying at Columbia University . She completed a course in art history, inspired by her Degas studies in Paris . She is an ambassador for YouthAIDS and - since 2009 - for the breast cancer organization Pinkitude, since her grandmother died of breast cancer.
