action

In Gatlin, South Carolina , Ethan Wate awakens from a recurring dream about a girl he doesn't know. In a voiceover story, he describes his joy in reading forbidden books, his despair over life in Gatlin and his dream of leaving town for college. On the first day of high school, he met Lena Duchannes, who resembled the girl he dreams of. The other classmates don't take Lena kindly, spread rumors about Lena's uncle Macon Ravenwood, and suggest that the Ravenwoods are devil worshipers. Above all, Emily Asher, Ethan's ex-girlfriend, is after Lena, as she immediately notices that there has been a spark between the two. When the classroom window shattered, the hostility of the other students only increased. Only Ethan stands by her.

On the drive home, Ethan almost runs over Lena because her car broke down. He takes her and drives her home. In doing so, they discover their mutual love for poetry and that both have lost their mother. Ethan is intrigued by the Ravenwoods estate. After being scared away by Macon, he returns to the mansion to give Lena a locket he found in the cemetery.

When the two touch the medallion, they trigger a mutual review of the Civil War in which Ethan wakes up at home. Macon disapproves of their love and affection for one another and conspires with Amma, Ethan's housekeeper and his father, to separate the two. But Ethan and Lena defy the two and remain a couple. Ethan learns that Lena is a witch (caster). Lena's real self is called on her 16th birthday, and that is where it decides whether she will be a good or a bad caster. But she has no idea that there is a dark curse on her. Lena only learns of the curse when her cousin Ridley arrives. In the American Civil War, Genevieve Duchannes' friend, soldier Ethan Wate Carter, was shot dead in action. Since she wanted to save her boyfriend, she cast a forbidden spell that drew Genevieve to the dark side and in return gave birth to her boyfriend, who, however, when drawn to the dark side, kills him again immediately. Since then, all Duchannes women have been affected by the curse.

Macon realizes that his sister and Lena's mother Sarafine are among the living again. It turns out that Sarafine slipped into the body of Mrs. Lincoln, the mother of Ethan's best friend Link. She wants Lena to come to the dark side, as she can become one of the strongest casters of all time. Lena tries together with Ethan and Amma, a seer, to break the curse. The seer takes the two of them to an underground library, in which the book of moons must lie, which can undo the curse. When Lena finds the spell, however, she realizes that she has to sacrifice Ethan for it. Since she loves him too much, she erases Ethan's memories of her so he can lead a normal life.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Ridley is working with Sarafine. Ridley ties up with Link in order to manipulate him. On the day of the Battle of Honey Hill reenactment , Link shoots Ethan.

At the same time, Lena is celebrating her 16th birthday. She senses that something has happened to Ethan and rushes to his aid, but has to realize that Ethan is dead. Sarafine appears and asks her daughter to come with her to the dark side and thus save her boyfriend. Lena is ready to sacrifice herself to give Ethan his life. But at that very moment, Ethan transforms into Macon. As it turns out, Macon sensed that Ethan was going to die and turned into him. Lena fights against the dark side and uses her powers to destroy Sarafine, who then leaves Mrs. Lincoln's body.

Six months later, Ethan, who still has no memories of Lena, goes on a college tour of the United States with Link. When he says goodbye to Amma, he expresses his regret to Lena that they never got to know each other better during their time in high school. Lena gives him a book, from which he reads a passage that he then associated with Lena. At the same time Lena is reading the magic books in the underground library. You learn that she is half good and half dark caster. When Ethan crossed the city limits, he remembers everything. He gets out of the car and calls Lena's name. She hears him and is freed from her dark side.

Reviews

“The roles are reversed, and witches dominate the paranormal milieu of this love story. Nevertheless, this film adaptation of a bestseller by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is visibly based on the preferences of the 'Twilight' generation. The presented universe, however, concentrates on the family. It is thanks to writer-director Richard LaGravenese, a romantic specialist, that the youthful romance largely avoids kitsch and emphasizes the magic of words and feelings more than that of effects. "

"[...] The dialogue-heavy plot is more reminiscent of a television series than a feature film, and in fact the plot of Beautiful Creatures develops as if LaGravanese could take an entire TV season to tell. The problem: Mercilessly little happens! The thin story is painfully drawn out without developing any drama or tense conflicts. [...] "

- critic.de

"Beautiful Creatures" is the extremely weak implementation of the fantasy novel '16 Moons - An Immortal Love ', which hits the same notch as the novels of the "Twilight" saga, but lacks any kind of raison d'etre. The figures are pale and - with the exception of some old stars - are embodied just as pale. The story takes its course, as you would expect from such genre food, but leaves out any kind of surprise and just doesn't seem to want to risk anything. Only the optics and properly used effects make "Beautiful Creatures" attractive - but that is by no means a reason to buy a cinema ticket for this film. "

“For fans of young adult fantasy, Beautiful Creatures is an entertaining film with a good (supporting) cast and some laughs. However, it cannot stand out from the ever-growing uniformity of the genre. "

success

With a production cost of $ 60 million, the film grossed about $ 60.05 million by August 22, 2013. In Germany the film was seen by almost 70,000 viewers.
