Sam Esmail (born September 17, 1977 in Hoboken , New Jersey ) is an American screenwriter and director , who became known as the showrunner of the thriller television series Mr. Robot .

Life

Sam Esmail was born in Hoboken , New Jersey , in 1977 . His family is from Egypt. Esmail writes that he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder as a child and was later diagnosed with social anxiety disorders . He also grew up a nerd and worked in the computer lab during college. Esmail attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and received his Masters of Fine Arts from the American Film Institute Conservatory, one of the world's top film schools, in 2004 .

In 2008 Esmail's first feature film script, Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations , landed on the "Black List", an annually compiled list of the most popular unproduced scripts in the film industry. A year later, his screenplay Norm the Movie also landed on the black list. In 2014 Esmail's directorial debut, Comet , was released on the American broadcaster IFC. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Esmail is the creator and showrunner of the television series Mr. Robot , which has aired on USA Network since 2015 . The television series follows a young hacker with personality disorders who is recruited by the mysterious Mr. Robot for an anarchist hacker group to shake the global economy. Esmail was primarily inspired by the hacker culture and the Arab Spring . The series was originally conceived as a film and is Esmail's first television work. The series premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. Mr. Robot was extended for a second season before it aired. Esmail has received a large, single-digit million dollar deal from Universal Cable Productions, under which he will continue to work as a showrunner for Mr. Robot and develop other television series for NBCUniversal . Including the half-hour drama series Homecoming , of which Amazon ordered two seasons in 2017. The series with the main actors Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale is based on the podcast of the same name .

Esmail has been in a relationship with Emmy Rossum , whom he met on his film Comet , since 2013 . They got married in May 2017.
