Amazon Prime is a paid subscription optionally offered by Amazon , with which Amazon customers can access additional services that are not available for regular customers or are not available for a fee. The best-known services are the prioritized delivery of a large number of orders within one to two working days and the streaming of music and videos as part of Prime Music and Prime Video .

history

In 2005, Amazon announced Amazon Prime as an exclusive membership service in the United States . For an annual fee of $ 79, subscribers received free two-day shipping on select products and discounted shipping on one-day delivery. The program also started in 2007 in Germany, Japan and Great Britain, in 2008 in France (as “Amazon Premium”), 2011 in Italy, 2013 in Canada, 2016 in India and 2017 in Mexico. The annual membership fee in Germany was 29 euros at the start of the program. It was later increased to 49 euros and since 2017 to 69 euros. In the United States, the 2014 annual membership fee increased from $ 79 to $ 99.

In November 2014, Amazon announced that the Prime offer would now also be available in Austria. There you can use the same services as in Germany - only the Morning and Evening Express shipping options are not available. The pricing is identical to that in Germany.

In January 2016, Amazon Prime reached 54 million members worldwide. In January 2020, Amazon announced that Prime has more than 150 million subscribers worldwide.

Prime Music

Prime Music is an in-house music streaming service that is similar to Spotify , Apple Music , YouTube Music, and other music streaming services. Prime Music gives Amazon Prime members access to a library of around two million songs at no additional cost. There is also a separate subscription called Amazon Music Unlimited , which includes the full range of over 60 million songs. It costs € 7.99 per month for Prime members and € 9.99 per month for regular customers.

Prime Video

Prime Video is an online video library and video-on-demand offering that has been part of Amazon Prime since 2014. The offer originally went online under the name “Amazon Instant Video”. In 2015 the offer was renamed "Amazon Video". Since February 2018, Amazon has been marketing all video content, regardless of free or paid offers, under the name "Prime Video".

Prime pantry

In April 2014, Amazon launched Prime Pantry, an exclusive Prime service for shipping normal household, non-perishable food in so-called pantry boxes. The service should be an attractive alternative to traditional weekly shopping on site. The service initially started in the US and was later available in the UK, Austria, India, Japan, Italy, Spain and France. The service has been available in Germany since October 2015. The products selected by the customers were delivered in a single pantry box with a capacity of around 20 kg. The standard shipping of the box was € 3.99 per order for the first box and € 0.99 from the second box.

Prime Pantry was discontinued in June 2020 in Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Most of Prime Pantry's products have since been included in the normal range.

Prime Now

In December 2014, Amazon announced that Prime members in parts of Manhattan and New York City would be able to use Prime Now to list products for a fee of $ 7.99 in just one hour, or within two hours with no additional fees to have them delivered. In Germany, the service has been available for selected locations since May 2016. As of 2020, Prime Now will be offered in Berlin, in the Munich area and in the greater Darmstadt and Frankfurt Süd area. The delivery costs for delivery within one hour are € 7.99 and for delivery within two hours € 3.99. Depending on the location, there is no delivery fee in the two-hour window from a minimum order value of 40 or 50 €.

Prime Air

Amazon Prime Air is a new type of delivery concept that uses unmanned aerial vehicles to bring orders to customers within 30 minutes or less. The system is currently still being developed. On December 7, 2016, a parcel was delivered for the first time on a trial basis to a customer who lives near the logistics center. It took 13 minutes from the customer's order entry on the Internet to delivery.

Prime Day

On July 15, 2015, Amazon hosted Prime Day for the first time in honor of the 20th anniversary of its website. During this event, numerous products from the range will be offered at a reduced price. The promotional discounts are only available to Amazon Prime subscribers. During the first Prime Day, customers worldwide ordered over 34 million products and statistically placed 398 orders per second. The first Prime Day exceeded the Black Friday sale last year by 18% and set a new record for Amazon in terms of orders received on a single day.

Prime Day 2018 started with a concert by Ariana Grande , which was also streamed on Amazon Video and Twitch . Prime Day 2019 was promoted with a concert by Taylor Swift , Dua Lipa , Becky G and SZA , which was streamed exclusively for Prime subscribers.

In 2018, the annual Prime Day in the United States was overshadowed for the first time by protests and workers' strikes over poor working conditions at Amazon.

The fifth Amazon Prime Day took place from July 15 to 16, 2019, and lasted two days for the first time. More than 175 million products have been sold worldwide for over $ 5 billion. Independent sellers achieved sales of around two billion US dollars.

Prime Gaming

Since August 2020, Amazon has been offering its own game service, Prime Gaming, which completely replaces the previously offered game service of its subsidiary Twitch , called Twitch Prime. Prime subscribers can now access computer games and in-game content for popular titles at no additional cost. A library of 20 playable titles was available at the start of the offer. New titles are added on a monthly basis.
