Amazon Air (formerly Amazon Prime Air , always Prime Air , not to be confused with the drone logistics program of the same name ) is a virtual cargo airline from Amazon.com , based in Hebron , Kentucky (near Cincinnati, Ohio) and based at the airport Cincinnati . The Amazon Air fleet is operated by ABX Air , Air Transport International , Southern Air and Atlas Air .

history

At the end of 2015, Amazon began offering cargo flights from Wilmington Air Park under the code name Project Aerosmith for test purposes . Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Amazon wanted to build its own freight fleet.

In March 2016, Amazon bought 19.9% of Air Transport International's stake and started operations with 20 Boeing 767s.

On August 4, 2016, Amazon presented a cargo plane painted with the Prime Air label , a 22-year-old Boeing 767-300F named Amazon One with the registration number N1997A in memory of the year Amazon went public and an allusion to the prime number 1997 (English: "Prime"). This aircraft was operated by Atlas Air at the time .

On January 31, 2017, Amazon announced that flight operations would be relocated to Cincinnati Airport and that this airport would be used as a hub in the future. Operations began on April 30, 2017. Amazon received $ 40 million in subsidies and plans to build 372 hectares of land for $ 1.5 billion, on which a nearly 28 hectare sorting hall and space for 100 aircraft will be built.

In December 2017, the company decided to rename the Prime Air name to Amazon Air to avoid confusion with the drone delivery service.

Amazon had rented cargo planes before, but without special company livery. In the longer term, Amazon planned to operate up to 40 cargo planes. At the end of 2017, 32 aircraft were in use, which were rented by Air Transport International (20) and Atlas Air (12). Some, at least eight, of the aircraft in use received the Amazon Prime logo. In December 2017, Amazon's own name for the cargo aircraft services was “Amazon Air”.

With its own cargo planes, Amazon could actually compete with UPS , FedEx and DHL . On the one hand operates Amazon since 2015 own trucks - fleet under the label of Prime, on the other hand Amazon may in the future excess space auction conveniently its cargo aircraft to third parties the same way as today's server capacity.
