YouTube Music is an online music service provided by the YouTube platform , developed and published since 2015 by YouTube, LLC , a subsidiary of Google, LLC .

Features and use

The music service offers the possibility of streaming music and music videos over the Internet via a website and its own mobile application . Access is via predefined genres, playlists and recommendations via the YouTube platform. In addition to a free version, the service offers premium functions against payment of a fee, with which, in addition to advertising-free use, playback in the background and downloading of songs for offline playback is enabled. The same benefits are offered to Google Play Music and YouTube Premium subscribers .

YouTube Music will replace Google Play Music in the course of 2020 and offers its customers the option of transferring the entire media library without any difficulties.

YouTube Music is available in 62 countries ( as of July 2019 ), including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

history

The YouTube Music app was introduced in October 2015 and released the following month. It was released along with the launch of YouTube Red, a subscription developed for the entire YouTube platform, including the music app YouTube Music (formerly YouTube Music Key). The app is available alongside the existing subscription to Google Play Music All Access, but is primarily aimed at users who listen to music on YouTube. YouTube Music was only available in the USA at the time, and shortly afterwards also in Australia and New Zealand.

On May 17, 2018, YouTube announced a revamped version of the YouTube music service, with a web-based desktop player and a revamped mobile app designed to offer better recommendations based on various factors. In addition, YouTube Music became a separate subscription service, positioned as a direct competitor to Apple Music and Spotify , offering ad-free streaming, background and audio streaming, and downloading for offline music content playback on YouTube. The service is said to continue to be available as part of the existing YouTube premium service (formerly YouTube Red) and to subscribers to Google Play Music All Access. Since June 5th there are discounts for schoolchildren and students.

Platforms

The YouTube Music app is currently available for Android and iOS devices. A web version is also available.

Playback via Chromecast , Roku and Google Home is also supported.

You can also play YouTube Music on Xbox 360 , Xbox One , Wii , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Android TV , Apple TV and other smart TVs .

criticism

In the comments on the presentation of YouTube Music, but also in the app store reviews, it was criticized that money is suddenly being asked for the background playback, which was previously not available. With competing products such as Deezer or Spotify, this function is already included in the free standard version.

The app is currently rated 4.1 stars in the Apple Appstore (as of August 12, 2019).
