Roku is a US public company based in Los Gatos . Roku produces a number of multimedia players that, among other things, enable the streaming of audiovisual content on a television. The company also generates its revenues through the sale of licenses for its hardware and software as well as through advertising income. According to the company, almost 7 billion hours of videos and music were streamed via Roku's platform in the first half of 2017. The streaming provider Netflix largely supports Roku's hardware.

Roku was founded in 2002 by Anthony Wood. The name "Roku" stands for the Japanese numeral for "six" and should make it clear that Roku was the sixth company that Woods was founded. Anthony Wood was named Vice President, Internet TV for Netflix in 2007. In 2017, Roku debuted with an IPO on the NASDAQ stock exchange .

In the same year the company reported a net loss of $ 63 million.
