In 2014, Amazon Germany combined the Amazon Prime offer , which promised next-day delivery for a fee and reduced shipping costs for orders of less than 20 euros, with the online video library Lovefilm bought by Amazon Germany in February 2006 . The new offer went online under the name “Amazon Instant Video”. In 2015 the offer was renamed "Amazon Video". Since February 2018, Amazon has been marketing all video content, regardless of free or paid offers, under the name "Prime Video".

Until February 2017, Amazon Germany bundled several offers under the name Amazon Video , some of which were only available to "Prime" customers and some to anyone with an Amazon customer account. These included the categories Amazon Video , in which there were films and series to rent and stream or buy digitally, Amazon Prime Video , in which content was bundled that was included in the Amazon Prime membership, and Amazon Channels , the pay- TV offer from Amazon.

Prime Video Channels

Prime Video Channels is a pay-TV offer for users who have an Amazon Prime subscription. It can only be received over the Internet. But the offer is very flexible compared to other providers. All channels offered can be subscribed to individually and canceled on a monthly basis. Each channel can also be tested free of charge for up to 30 days.

In-house productions

Since 2013, Amazon Studios have been producing several pilot episodes each year on behalf of Amazon, which can be made available on Prime Video and rated by users. The series whose pilot episodes receive the most positive reviews are produced.

How the video-on-demand service works

Prime Video uses Microsoft Silverlight technology and Akamai's infrastructure to stream content . The content is copy-protected by Google's Widevine DRM . Some content is available in high resolution quality. To play this HD content, an Internet connection with at least 3.5 Mbit / s and HDCP support on all devices is required. The playback of SD content requires at least a 900 kBit / s connection. Since 2015, the service has also supported video playback via HTML5 in the browsers Firefox (from version 47), Google Chrome , Internet Explorer 11 , Microsoft Edge , Opera (from version 31) and Safari (from version 5).

Selected films and series can be downloaded to iOS devices, Android devices, Fire tablets (except first generation) and Fire Phones using the Amazon Video app .

Supported devices

Prime Video can be used on Windows , macOS , Linux , Google Chrome OS , Android (including Fire Tablets), iOS and some game consoles as well as Internet-enabled TVs and Blu-ray Disc players.

Playback of HD content is not possible on the first generation Kindle tablets and, when played on the desktop computer, only on Windows and macOS , but not on Linux . FSK-18 content can only be activated and streamed by setting up a four-digit PIN entry, which includes verification of the age of the account owner by entering the identity card number.

Since August 2015, it has been possible for Android devices to stream films and series via the cellular network and FSK-18 content. Originally, streaming was only possible via WiFi .

International offers

Prime Video has been available in the United States since September 2006, in Japan since November 2013, and in the United Kingdom since February 2014.
