Akamai Technologies (from Akamai in Hawaiian - "intelligent", "refined") is one of the world's largest providers for the delivery and acceleration of online applications and content. The initial core business was to redirect end-user access to web offers (servers) of companies that are Akamai customers to their own servers, which are significantly closer to the end user. This relieves the provider servers and wide area networks, speeds up access times for the end user, and the content providers do not need super-broadband internet connections.

technology

Akamai coordinates and optimizes, for example, the load distribution of web content ( content delivery network ), serves as a cloud service and offers protection against hacker attacks such as DDoS attacks . This service runs invisibly in the background for the user when surfing the Internet . Akamai thus receives mandatory personal data of the user, at least his current IP address including the exact time.

Akamai operates worldwide with approximately 275,000 servers in 136 countries and nearly 1,500 networks.

Business structure

Akamai's more than 3,500 customers include Adobe , Airbus , Apple , ARD , BMW , the German Chancellery , eBay , Facebook , Microsoft , the NSA , NASA , Philips , Red Bull , the US Army , the US State Department , as well as virus protection software manufacturers McAfee , Bitdefender and Avast and numerous other television stations and public bodies such as security agencies and universities.

Akamai's international headquarters are in Cambridge , Massachusetts , USA , and the German branch has been in Garching near Munich since 2012 . The head office for international business has been in Addlestone , UK , since 2012 .

History and Development

Akamai's Headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts

In 1995, math professor Tom Leighton and student Daniel M. Lewin began collaborating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In August 1998 the two founded Akamai Technologies with Jonathan Seelig .

In January 1999, Akamai had approximately $ 9 million and 35 employees. Akamai began providing services in April 1999, and for the first half of 1999, Apple generated approximately 75% of its revenue . In June 1999, Apple invested approximately $ 12.5 million in Akamai preferred stock . As of August 1999, Akamai had 900 servers in 25 telecommunications networks in 15 countries. In August 1999, Cisco invested approximately $ 49 million in Akamai preferred stock. Akamai then immediately prepared to go public . In September 1999, Microsoft invested approximately $ 15 million in Akamai preferred stock. Akamai now owned five percent Apple and one percent Microsoft. As of October 1999, Akamai operated 1,475 servers in 55 telecommunications networks and 24 countries.

In early 2000 Akamai took over the Internet broadcaster "Network24". In February 2000, the provider Intervu followed for a purchase price of around 2.8 billion US dollars. The merger created the world's largest Internet provider for streaming media and other broadband applications. The two providers together had 3,000 servers in 100 networks spread over 40 countries.

As of the fall of 2001, Akamai's Content Delivery Network consisted of over 13,000 servers in over 1,000 networks and 63 countries.

In May 2004 there was an almost complete failure of the web services, so that many of the large network presences of Akamai customers could not be reached. Initially suspected Akamai a denial-of-service -attack, later, the company announced the problem was due to a bug in the Akamai software that could be corrected after 90 minutes.

In 2005, the company expanded its offering to accelerate web applications.

At the beginning of November 2010, Akamai opened its headquarters for international business (outside the USA) in Zurich. Martin Häring, Vice President Marketing, headed a team of 20 there. Just three years later, the EMEA headquarters were relocated and have been in Addlestone ( UK ) ever since .

In 2015, Akamai was responsible for 15-30% of all web traffic.
