The fire phone is the first smartphone from Amazon . It was sold from mid-2014 to mid-2015. Special functions are the image recognition and sales software Firefly and the dynamic perspective technology of the smartphone display.
distribution
The fire phone was introduced on 18 June 2014 and was from 25 July 2014 about 649 US dollars in the US in sales.
The smartphone has been available in Germany since September 30, 2014, but only with a Netlock in favor of Deutsche Telekom . However, this could be removed when purchasing directly from Amazon using the unlock code provided. The Fire Phone was initially only available with a Telekom contract in Germany, but from October 2014 it could also be purchased without a contract and with an existing Telekom Netlock for 449 euros (32 GB model) or 549 euros (64 GB) . In the following months Amazon lowered the price to 149 euros for the 32 GB model. At the end of May 2015, the sale of the Amazon Fire Phone in Germany was discontinued, and since the end of August 2015 it has not been available in the USA either.
technology
Basics
- Processor: The System-on-a-Chip is a Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2 GHz with four cores from Qualcomm , consisting of a Krait 400 processor and an Adreno 330 graphics unit.
- Screen: The Fire Phone is equipped with a 4.7-inch IPS-LC screen with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels (720p), which is protected by Gorilla Glass .
- Buttons: The smartphone is equipped with three side buttons that allow you to change the volume and activate the camera.
A nano SIM card is used.
camera
The Fire Phone is equipped with a 13-megapixel camera for photos and HD videos. An extra button is installed for the photos, which makes it possible to take photos immediately even when the screen is switched off. The images can be uploaded to unlimited cloud storage that is free for the user . The camera is also equipped with an auto focus and optical image stabilizer . HDR and panorama modes can be switched on. A series photo mode ( burst mode ) enables the camera to take several pictures in quick succession.
The special feature of the camera, however, is the unique Dynamic Perspective and Firefly technology. Thanks to Dynamic Perspective , it is possible for the camera, supported by four infrared cameras or sensors, to recognize the viewing angle of the user on the camera and use this data to change the display on the screen. In this way, the images can be viewed three-dimensionally on the screen, since tilting the head causes a change on the screen. With this function it is possible, for example, to look at buildings from several sides. Firefly is used to recognize different things, for example QR codes , barcodes but also music, images, texts and products in general. After the detection, in addition to general information about the corresponding object, the option to purchase the product immediately is also offered.
operating system
The Fire Phone 's operating system called Fire OS is based on Google's Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system , but has received some modifications. Sun Fire OS is on the use of Amazon's own services like Amazon Instant Video or reading Kindle - E-books tailored. Using the so-called Mayday button , it is possible to access the help functions directly or to get in touch with an Amazon employee live within 15 seconds. Fire OS also automatically moves unused files to the cloud . However, you cannot access the Google Play Store directly; you have to rely on the in-house Amazon Appstore . Since the Fire OS update to version 3.6.8, however, it is also possible to use the Play Store and its apps by installing separate Google program packages. At the beginning of May 2015 Fire OS 4.6.1 was released, which is based on Android version 4.4.4 (KitKat). There has been no further update since this update. The employees who worked on the development of the Fire Phone and its possible successor have been partially dismissed, which is why no further updates nor a successor to the smartphone are expected. All other employees were assigned to the Amazon Echo project .
The Fire Phone in the test
In the test by Stiftung Warentest , the Fire Phone's poor voice quality was criticized, which becomes a problem, especially when it comes to background noise. The testers also found the network sensitivity and camera quality less than convincing. On the other hand, the brightness of the display was positively emphasized, which can be read comparatively well even in sunlight.
