Dua Lipa (born August 22, 1995 in London ) is a British singer and songwriter .

biography

Until 2016: musical beginnings and breakthrough

Dua Lipa's family are Kosovar Albanians from Pristina , her father Dukagjin Lipa was a musician there and later in England. She was born in London. Her grandmother came up with the idea to call her Dua , which is Albanian and means love. Dua Lipa attended the renowned Sylvia Young Theater School . She had to interrupt her education there for a while because her parents went back to Kosovo for professional reasons in 2008 before Dua Lipa returned to London alone at the age of 15. Working in clubs and as a model , she got in touch with Marlon Roudette , who encouraged her to record demos, which she discontinued at SoundCloud from 2012 .

She became aware of Lana Del Rey's managers , and she received a recording deal from Universal Music . This enabled her to work with several American producers such as Emile Haynie and Rodney Jerkins for her debut album . Her first single New Love was released in the summer of 2015 . Be the One followed in December , with which she was successful for the first time. In addition to number eleven in the German single charts, it was able to advance to the top 10 of over ten countries, including three number one placements. The record had sold around half a million times by the end of 2016.

In cooperation with the Jamaican rapper Sean Paul , the song No Lie was released in November 2016 , of which 1.5 million copies were sold. In England, Lipa was included in the BBC's Sound of 2016 list at the turn of the year , which predicts the most promising newcomers for the following year.

2017: Debut album Dua Lipa

The songs Hotter than Hell and Blow Your Mind (Mwah) followed as the third and fourth pre-single releases of their self-titled debut album. While the former was able to build on the success in European countries, it gained attention for the first time in North and South America with Blow Your Mind (Mwah) , including a placement in the US singles charts. Room for 2 and Thinking 'Bout You were released as promo singles in advance.

At the AVA-NYE Festival in Myanmar , the Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix presented the song they recorded together, Scared to Be Lonely , which was released as a single in January 2017. In April 2017 she released Lost in Your Light , a collaboration with US singer Miguel, as the last pre-release single from her upcoming debut album. The song was made available for free to anyone who pre-ordered the album. In Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland the song reached the official singles charts.

Her self-titled studio album was released in June 2017. It reached the charts in over 25 countries, including the top 10 11 times. With over 16,000 units sold in the first week, Dua Lipa also reached number 5 on the UK charts. Chris Martin , Ilsey Juber, Emily Warren and MNEK also contributed to the creation of the album . She extended her US and European tour, which she started in spring 2017, to include a self-titled tour to promote the album.

In June 2017, the sixth single from their debut album was released. As the eighth and final official release from their debut studio album, Lipa released the song IDGAF in January 2018 . The song had over a million sales with over 20 top ten placements. The official music video was nominated for Best Choreography at the MTV Video Music Awards 2018. At the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in Los Angeles, Lipa sang the song with Charli XCX , Zara Larsson , Alma and . She also worked with EDM producer Whethan, creating the track High , which was released in February 2018 as part of the US film Fifty Shades of Gray .

At the Brit Awards 2018 the singer was named best artist and "Breakthrough Act" of the year. In April 2018 she released the single One Kiss , a collaboration with Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris . The song reached the top of the official singles charts in 21 countries and at the same time broke the previous record for the longest number one song by a singer in the past decade.
