Sound of… is the name of an annual forecast by the British broadcaster BBC , which new musicians will make the breakthrough in the following year.

Since 2003 the BBC has published its sound-of- polls at the beginning of each year . At the end of each year, people from the music industry (critics, moderators and editors) are asked which musicians they think have the greatest chance of making a breakthrough in the following year. The number of respondents rose from initially around 40 to over 160 for the Sound of 2011 . A top 10 list was determined up to 2009, since then only the top 5 have been announced, but since 2009 there has been a list of nominees with 15 musicians or bands. The chances of success in the UK music market are primarily assessed, but candidates can come from any country.

The BBC names certain criteria for the candidates, so they may have been in the charts, but not yet had a top 20 hit. And they must not have achieved fame in any other way, for example as a band member or through television appearances.

In fact, most of the typed newcomers had at least minor successes in the year, which is why the sound-of-survey is received with great interest every year. However, it is criticized that, conversely, this interest can only be the trigger for success. Guardian critic Kitty Empire, who herself took part in the survey in 2008, calls the list a “ self-fulfilling prophecy ” and says: “it will happen because we all say it will” (it will happen because we all say it will).
