George Ezra Barnett (born June 7, 1993 in Hertford ) is a British singer-songwriter .

biography

George Ezra was born in 1993 in Hertford, England, the son of an art teacher and a deputy headmistress. He has an older sister who helped him start his career and a younger brother who also works as a singer-songwriter as Ten Tonnes .

He made his stage debut at the age of 13 in a cover band . In Bristol he studied for a year at the Institute of Modern Music, but then dropped out. The scar on his forehead also dates from this time. At the age of 18 he started a music career. Even at a young age, he stood out for his rough and bluesy voice. His song Angry Hill , uploaded to BBC Introducing in spring 2012, was selected and performed by BBC Bristol. The following year he performed at the Glastonbury Festival . His first EP Did You Hear the Rain? released Ezra in November 2013. The song Budapest made it into the UK charts at number 68. In the BBC's Sound of 2014 forecast , which predicts an artist's breakthrough in the following year, it was placed at number five.

At the beginning of 2014, Ezra went on tour through England and Europe and also performed in Germany and Switzerland. In January and February Budapest was in the top ten in Italy and Benelux, in March it also hit the charts in German-speaking countries and climbed into the top ten by the end of April. The song reached number one in Austria . Ezra achieved gold status in Germany and Austria . Only after the song was successful on the continent did it hit the charts again in Great Britain, this time making it to number 3.

At the same time, the debut album Wanted on Voyage was released , which also entered the UK charts at number 3 and reached the top 10 of the German-speaking countries. With a two-month delay, it moved up to number one in the UK . Manuel Berger wrote about the album on laut.de , but at the length of the album he surprised with versatility and he actually deserved to be called a singer-songwriter - without any quotes.

In June 2017 the song Don't Matter Now was released as the first single from his upcoming studio album. Although it could not follow the success of Blame It on Me commercially , it was still very popular in airplay. For 200,000 units sold, he was awarded a silver record for the song in the UK. In an interview with NME Magazine , he said that he wrote the song in late 2015. He dedicated the song Paradise , released in January 2018, to the relationship with his girlfriend , which became a success in the course of spring 2018. In Austria and Ireland, among others, the track moved up to the top 10 and reached number two and number one in Great Britain and Scotland. In Germany, the single was awarded a gold record.

In March 2018, Hold My Girl and Pretty Shining People were released as promo singles. Both reached the singles charts in Great Britain and Ireland. At the end of the month Ezra released his second studio album Staying at Tamara’s . Henrike Möller wrote about this in her record review in tip : “George Ezra admits that he is still emulating Paul Simon's Graceland , but his full-bodied country western - folk rock has gained danceable, easy-going and playful nuances that go well with the harmonize childish escapism , which his lyrics are about. ”With the album he landed again at the top of the British charts. Staying at Tamara’s continued the success of his debut album with top 10 positions in a number of other countries .

In May 2018, Shotgun, the third single from his album, was released. He said that he got the idea for the main features of the song on Montjuïc in Barcelona . He took some time out there to escape the pressure of album work. With around two million units sold within nine months, the song developed into one of its most successful recordings. In addition, there was an increasing airplay success in the course of late summer 2018.

The fourth single from Staying at Tamara’s was the ballad Hold My Girl , which had already been released as a promo single. The song followed on from the success of its predecessor in the UK. A remix version by Danish DJ and producer Martin Jensen followed as a single track on various download and streaming platforms. This subsequently drew attention to the song, whereupon it was also included in their programs by German radio stations.
