Kwabs (* 24 April 1990 in London as Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong ) is a British soul - singer .
Life
Kwabs grew up with foster parents in the London borough of Bermondsey , his birth parents come from Ghana . A teacher discovered his musical talent and placed him in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra , where he was lead singer for three years. After graduating from high school, he studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music . In 2011 he took part in the BBC reality TV show Goldie's Band - By Royal Appointment by drum and bass musician Goldie , which culminated in a performance by Kwab at Buckingham Palace .
Kwab's cover version of Corinne Bailey Rae's song Like a Star went viral on YouTube in 2012 . MTV and BBC Radio became aware of him, and Kwabs got a record deal with Atlantic Records . The cooperation with the producer Sohn had a formative influence on the sound of his debut EP Wrong or Wright , the follow-up EP Pray for Love and the single Walk are more pop- oriented. With Walk , Kwabs reached number 71 in the UK singles chart and number 1 in the iTunes music charts. In Germany it reached number one in the official charts in January 2015 .
He worked with Dave Okumu and Plan B on his debut album Love + War . The song Perfect Ruin was released in advance in February 2015 and the song Fight for Love , "modern disco - soul ", backed by "dark beats" in July 2015 . The premiere was postponed several times; the album was released on September 11, 2015. Reviewers spoke of a "consistently solid, sometimes even above-average modern soul", praised the warm, deeply human timbre of his voice in a scratchy balance with chilled electro arrangements.
