Utopia Island (formerly Havana Nights Festival ) is an international music festival for electronic music . Over the years, the festival has developed from a purely electronic festival to a cross-over festival with a broader musical focus (electro, pop, hip-hop, EDM) on various stages. The festival organized by Klangfeld Live GmbH takes place annually over three days in summer at the Aquapark near Moosburg an der Isar ( Bavaria ) near Munich Airport .

history

The festival has its origins in 2003 as a sports party on the sports grounds in Haag an der Amper . It was organized by the footballers of VfR Haag. In the next edition in 2007, it was referred to as a festival called Havana Nights . Over time, more famous artists appeared and the number of visitors grew. In 2010 there were four stages. The organizers joined forces to form Klangfeld GmbH . In 2011, the capacity limit of the 16,000 square meter site was reached (5,000 visitors) and the organizers were therefore not given a permit for further festivals at this location for safety reasons (narrow access). Furthermore, some residents criticized the volume of the festival.

Two years later, the name was changed to Utopia Island and the move to the Aquapark in Moosburg. In the first year at a new location, the celebration was attended by around 7,000 visitors.

In 2014 the festival was as good as sold out, with five stages and 8,000 visitors for the first time. Already on Thursday, before the official start of the festival, almost 2,500 guests besieged the campsite.

In 2015 the campsite in particular was expanded so that around 10,000 guests celebrated.

In 2016 the number of visitors increased to 11,500.

In 2017, a new visitor record was achieved with 15,000 visitors. Driven by the (visitor) growth in recent years, the music spectrum should be expanded again in order to be able to offer visitors even more variety. Utopia Island is developing into a cross-over festival, which combines different music genres in one festival. In addition to electronic music, music from the genres of pop, hip-hop and EDM is also offered on various stages.

Although there was a record number of visitors in 2017, the reception was negative due to bad weather (continuous rain). Above all, the infrastructure was not able to cope with the large number of visitors in bad weather. The organizers promised a remedy for the 2018 festival, but had to cancel planning in winter 2017 and put off ticket owners for the 2019 season.

But there was no new planning in 2019 either. A new Limestone Festival is planned on the site for 2020, so it must be assumed that the original festival series under the old name Utopia Island Festival will not be continued.

concept

The aim of the festival is to bring nationally and internationally known artists together with up-and-coming artists from the region and thus enable them to make important contacts. Meanwhile, visitors should have the opportunity to take a break from everyday life and have fun in a holiday atmosphere. The name of the festival was based on the novel Utopia by Thomas More and is intended to emphasize the equality of all festival visitors.

Event site

The Aquapark in Moosburg

The Aquapark in Moosburg an der Isar serves as the venue. There is celebrated on the shore of the quarry pond. The reasons for the choice of location were the good transport connections, the size of the site and the high recreational value. Visitors are also allowed to camp on the premises. The organizers offer shuttle buses to the festival site. Moreover, it is Wi-Fi available for free. There are numerous gastronomic offers, a supermarket, bakery and florists. In 2015, a ferris wheel was also set up and helicopter flights were offered over the site. Most of the stages are sheltered from the weather in tents, where there are laser visualizations to accompany the music. In addition to the main stage, the five stages are named Aura, Seaside, Terra and Heart. They should clarify the four elements and love as the fifth element and are designed accordingly.

music

The program covers almost the entire range of electronic music such as electro , minimal techno , techno , house , drum and bass , dubstep and breakbeat . It also includes indie / alternative and hip-hop artists .
