MØ (2016)

(born August 13, 1988 in Odense , Denmark; actually Karen Marie Ørsted ) is a Danish singer-songwriter and is under contract with Sony Music Entertainment . MØ, Danish for “young woman, girl”, also short for Marie Ørsted, has been compared in the past to electro-pop artists such as Grimes and Twin Shadow .

Life

Karen Marie Ørsted grew up in Ubberud , a village near Odense. Her interest in a career as a musician was sparked by the Spice Girls' 1996 album Spice . She learned the piano and played in various school bands. She later completed a five-year training course at the Odense Art Academy ( Det Fynske Kunstakademi ), which she graduated in May 2013.

In 2007 she founded the electropunk band MOR with Josefine Struckmann in Odense and had her first public appearances. In 2009 the band released their debut EP Fisse i dit fjæs on Luk Røven / Mastermind Records, followed by the EP Vanvidstimer in 2011 . In 2009 Karen Marie Ørsted began a solo career at the same time under the stage name MØ.

In 2012 she met the musician and producer Ronni Vindahl, with whom she has worked since then. MØ's single Pilgrim , produced by him, entered the Danish charts in March 2013 and reached number 11. It was also released on a record with the song Maiden as the B-side . In October, MØ's debut solo EP Bikini Daze was released on Chess Club / RCA Victor . It received mostly positive reviews, so the New Musical Express Møs praised the distinctive voice and personality with which they stand out from the crowd of Scandinavian electro-pop musicians. The EP contains among other things the song XXX 88 produced by Diplo , which was released as a single shortly afterwards. The accompanying music video, shot in Los Angeles , achieved around 876,000 clicks on YouTube. MØ was also involved in Avicii's song Dear Boy (album True ), which reached number 18 on the Swedish charts in October 2013.

In autumn 2013 MØ was on a European tour , among other things as a supporting act for AlunaGeorge and Diplo's music project Major Lazer .

MØ, who currently lives in Copenhagen , recorded her debut album No Mythologies to Follow with Vindahl there . It was released by Chess Club / RCA Victor in 2014 and reached number 2 in the Danish charts. For this she was awarded the European Border Breakers Award in the same year . At the Danish Music Awards 2014 she won in the four categories of best Danish solo artist, newcomer, best album and music video.

MØ contributed the vocals to the March 2nd, 2015 published track Lean On by Major Lazer, on which DJ Snake was also involved. It was a pre-release from Major Lazer's third album Peace is the Mission , which was released in June. The song entered the charts internationally. In Denmark , Switzerland , the Netherlands , Finland and Australia it became a number one hit , in Germany it reached number 4. MØ is also involved in Major Lazer's song Cold Water with Justin Bieber .
