True is the debut studio album from Swedish DJ Avicii . It was released worldwide in September 2013. The songs Wake Me Up and You Make Me were released as singles in advance .

Publication & production

True was released on September 13, 2013 via PRMD Music and Universal Island, a sub-label of the Universal Music Group record company . The first release date was planned for September 17th. The album features collaborations with the American guitarist Nile Rodgers , the country musician Mac Davis , Mike Einziger from the American rock band Incubus , the American soul singer Aloe Blacc , the singer and songwriter Dan Tyminski from the bluegrass band Alison Krauss and Union Station and the American singer Adam Lambert . Although the song Heart Upon My Sleeve in its original version contains a vocal part by the singer Dan Reynolds of the American indie rock band Imagine Dragons , there is an instrumental version on the album. Avicii said that, unlike his previous songs, the album has little to do with his electronic dance and house music style, but instead contains elements from other genres such as country music. Avicii already gave first impressions of the album with the pre- single Wake Me Up , which reached number one in several national charts. The second single You Make Me , recorded with Salem Al Fakir , was released on August 30, 2013.

The album wasn't released on the same day worldwide. The following table gives an overview of some countries.

composition

Since starting work on the studio album, Avicii has stated several times that the material on the album is not a replica of his previous hit levels and silhouettes , but rather an experimental and more synthetic sound carrier. In his own words he wanted to bring "disturbance" into the electronic music scene, where he is described as "half stuck". Within the framework of the listener, a reaction to the heavy bluegrass and country music influences should arise. Avicii stated, "We knew people would feel provoked". He further said of True: "True is true to my sound, but also shows many more of my own influences and musical preferences. For me it is already a success when people resonate - no matter how many. It is what I stand for . He who loves it loves what I love. That's what the fans are to me. "

Promotion & Criticism

On the Internet

As early as April 2013, Avicii published a 60-minute promotional mix of the new album and other of his songs on the online audio platform SoundCloud. The mix featured several unreleased tracks from the album, such as Wake Me Up! and songs with Dan Reynolds and Mac Davis. Older songs like My Feelings For You and I Could Be the One were also included. To date, the promo mix has been played over three million times. Before the release, a number of album tracks found their way illegally onto the Internet. These also served as advertising for the album and had a positive effect on the audience.

Ultra Music Festival

Avicii presented over forty minutes of new material from the album at the Ultra Music Festival on March 22, 2013, whereby Avicii received not only overwhelmingly positive feedback but also negative reactions from critics, fans and media alike. The new material, in which bluegrass and country elements were incorporated, as well as the live performance of Aloe Blacc, generated a lot of negative feedback at the festival. The participants criticized the DJ for making the experimental material an actually high-quality dance festival. However, fans were also enthusiastic about the DJ's new music and praise his performance at the Ultra Music Festival.

The #TrueReveal project started in August 2013. On the official site of the project, a glass cube was seen surrounded by large speakers. The cube contained True's album cover hidden behind a pane of glass. The sounds of the next single can be heard from the speakers. On Twitter, fans should send a tweet with the hash tag #TrueReveal . Every single tweet sent by fans gradually reveals the new track - first the bassline starts, more instruments are added, the volume increases until the huge darkened glass pane behind which the veiled album cover is hidden bursts and that Cover becomes visible. Ultimately, both the original song and the album cover will be featured. The experiment ended on August 13, 2013. With over 100,000 tweets, the glass still couldn't be broken. A crane was called and a worker tossed the crane's hook into the jar. It broke and the album cover and song were revealed.

True (Avicii by Avicii)

On February 17, 2014, Avicii's manager and studio partner Ash Pournouri confirmed via his Facebook , Twitter and Instagram profiles that Avicii was working on a remix version of his debut album True . This contains remixed versions of all tracks from the original versions. Heart Upon My Sleeve was the only track that was not remixed. It is interesting that some of the remixes on the album are actually older versions or unfinished alternative versions, which Avicii played at live concerts in the course of the album's creation and modified several times before True was released . On February 20, 2014 it was announced that the remix album would be released on March 24, 2014.

Success story

Avicii announced for the first time parallel to the single release of Wake Me Up that he would release an album. This was already causing joy on the Internet at the time. The album title was later announced. The CD has been available for pre-order from iTunes since August 2013. Even without an audio sample, the album was largely rated positively and even named "Album of the Year". When the songs were illegally uploaded on the Internet, which actually had a positive effect on the album, critics and fans wrote numerous reviews. At the Ultra Music Festival he played most of the songs. With the TrueReveal project, he released the album cover. Thanks to strong pre-orders, the album was able to reach the iTunes album charts even before it was released.

Commercial win

The pre-release single Wake Me Up has already far exceeded the success of Levels and reached number one in over 25 countries and the top five in the USA. The next single You Make Me was also a number one hit. Thanks to heavy downloads, all the songs in the release reached the singles charts of all countries. The album entered the top 10 of over ten countries. It reached number 5 in Germany, number 2 in Great Britain and number one in Sweden. It was also able to enter the US Billboard charts and reach number 5 there.
