Salem Lars Al Fakir (born October 27, 1981 in Huddinge , Stockholm County ) is a Swedish musician and singer . While he has been enjoying success in Sweden since the beginning of his career, he is known across the borders through collaborations with Avicii and Axwell Λ Ingrosso . As an author and singer, he is an integral part of the latter project together with Vincent Pontare . Pontare and Al Fakir are still active as Vargas & Lagola .

Life

Salem Al Fakir's father, Nabil, is of Syrian origin and is from Damascus, while his mother, Inger, is from Sweden. Salem is the fourth of six siblings (Aminah, Ayman, Nassim, Sami and Fares).

Al Fakir learned to play the violin at the age of four and then toured Russia as a solo violinist. At the age of fourteen he returned to Sweden to study jazz piano. He's also a comedian, especially online. He released his debut album Ute och cyklar in February 2012. Together with his wife Caroline, Salem has a daughter, Greta, born on March 6, 2012.

Career

In the fall of 2006, Salem Al Fakir released his first EP under the name Dream Girl . His debut album was released in January 2007. It became a huge success and rose to number one on the Swedish charts. In addition, Al Fakir announced that he had recorded the entire album in his bedroom and basement alone and was responsible for writing, mixing and producing the album. He also played all of the instruments on the album himself, except for the horns his brother Sami used and the drums on Dream Girl and Bright Side Of Life which was played by Tim Lundblad.

Good Song and This Is Who I Am are two other single releases. The also Swedish producers Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso remixed the song from It's True and released it as a single. It rose to the top half of the chart and exceeded the success of the original.

His re-recording of It's Only You , a track from his debut album, was re-titled It's Only You (Part II) and was used in the commercial for the Volvo XC60 . An EP with the songs It's Only You Part II , Twelve Fingers , Dream Girl and It's True was released in several European countries in November 2008.

Under the pseudonym Salem , the single Astronaut was released on March 4, 2009 in Sweden. The accompanying album of the same name was released on March 18, 2009. Roxy was the next single from the album. Both singles and the album hit the charts.

On November 16, 2009, Salem Al Fakir was announced as a participant in the 2010 Melodifestivalen . This is Swedish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010. He performed there with the song Keep On Walking , which he wrote and composed himself. He appeared in the final of the preliminary round in Stockholm on March 13, 2010, but finally lost to the title This Is My Life by Anna Bergendahl . 4 O'Clock was the next single from his third album Ignore This . The song was featured in the TV ad campaign for the Telia phone company in 2010.

Al Fakir was also co-producer and singer on the track Silhouettes by Swedish DJ Avicii . The song was officially released on April 27, 2012 and was able to achieve high chart positions in various European countries. The highest position was 11th in Sweden. From this point on there were several collaborations with Avicii. The following year they released their single You Make Me with which he first reached number one in the Swedish single charts.

On June 13, 2015 he sang the song Fix You by the band Coldplay at the wedding of Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist .

He is under contract with Little Stereo Recordings / Warner Music Sweden .

As a songwriter

Al Fakir was already active as a songwriter before starting his solo career. He was involved in Ph3s Medicin and Snooks Longest Fram I Taxin as a songwriter as well as a producer. The track's music video was nominated for a Grammis MTV Award in the Best Music Video category.

In 2011 Al Fakir took part in Skarp Oskar's studio album Songs in the Tree of Life , in which he was not only active as a songwriter, but also contributed the vocals to selected songs. He acted as a songwriter and composer for the entire Veronica Maggio album Handen i fickan almost jag bryr mig and Petter album Början på allt . Al Fakir worked with the Swedish musician Vincent Pontare on both studio albums .

From then on, Al Fakir and Pontare developed into a solid duo. For Avicii's debut album True , they controlled the two songs Hey Brother and You Make Me , Al Fakir also sang the latter.

In 2014 the two Swedish House Mafia members Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso founded the Axwell Λ Ingrosso project , of which Al Fakir and Pontare became an integral part. You acted here not only as a songwriter, but also as a singer. The debut single Something New was already a huge success in the EDM scene. In 2015 they also appeared for the first time as with the leaders Axwell and Ingrosso, which is where Vargas & Lagola originated.

Also in 2015 they were part of the team behind Madonna's studio album Rebel Heart and Galantis ' Call If You Need Me . At the same time, they also worked outside of dance and EDM music with musicians such as Miike Snow and Seinabo Sey .
