More Than You Know ( English as "More than you know") is a song by the Swedish DJ - and producer - duo Axwell Λ Ingrosso . The song was sung by the Swedish musician Kristoffer Fogelmark . It was released on May 27, 2017 via the record labels "Refune Music" and " Virgin - EMI -Records" as well as the major label " Universal Music ". The track is the second single from their EP of the same name, which was released on May 24, 2017, and the tenth from their studio album More Than You Know , which was released in December 2017. In collaboration with the Colombian musicians Sebastián Yatra and Cali & El Dandee Axwell and Ingrosso produced a Spanish version of the song that has Latin pop influences .

background

The demo of the song was created in 2013, originally as a song by the Swedish songwriter and musician duo Vargas & Lagola , consisting of Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare, who later passed the song on to Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso. Richard Zastenker was also active as a songwriter. Axwell and Ingrosso played the instruments to be heard themselves and produced the result together with Zastenker and Emir Kobilic . The duo did the arrangements, mixings and mastering together with Alex Gordon. The entire creation took place in Abbey Road Studios in London and Good Father Studios in Stockholm. Kristoffer Fogelmark took care of the vocals, Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir provided the background vocals . Sebastian Ingrosso's own record label “Refune Music” and the “ Universal Music ” record label “ Virgin - EMI -Records” took over the main release. The single was pressed by Sony DADC . The rights to the song are owned by "Axwell Music AB" and "Refune Music Ltd."

The song premiered on April 12, 2015 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the USA. Axwell Λ Ingrosso Vargas & Lagola (Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare) brought the songwriter duo and musician duo behind the track onto the stage. In the documentary Why we quit Swedish House Mafia , produced by Shazam in June 2015 , they gave an insight into the project. At the time, however, the song consisted only of the break. The drop was brought in in the form of a mash-up from Tiësto and DallasK's Show Me . However, by 2017 the song found no use in their sets. It wasn't until the Ultra Music Festival in Miami that the track was played again. There also in full version.

Latin version

On October 4, 2017, the first previews of a Spanish version of More Than You Know appeared on the Internet . This was created in collaboration with the Colombian singer Sebastián Yatra and the Colombian reggaeton duo Cali & El Dandee. The full version of the track was uploaded to her official Facebook account on October 6, 2017. At the same time a separate music video. On the same day the new version was released as a single under the title Más De Lo Que Sabes (More Than You Know) . The vocal musicians were not given as a feature, but as a full interpreter. The chorus was re-sung in English by Yatra, while the verses were translated into Spanish and put out of tune by Cali & El Dandee, sometimes together with Yatra.

Artwork

The artwork of the single is based on that of the EP. A bathtub can be seen on both. Above this is the lambda (Λ), which acts as the duo's logo in the broadest sense. This provides the purple-red-yellow-colored light that poorly illuminates the room. The light of the single cover of the Latin version was given a purple cast. Several objects can be seen on the floor that indicate a previous night of partying. This is reinforced by a rubber doll on the EP cover and by the two performers themselves on the single cover. These are obviously hungover in the tub. The title of the EP or the single can be seen written on the wall under the Lambda logo. In addition, the title and artist are stamped into the cover of the CD single.

Musical and content

The song is based on a 4/4 time signature and the tempo is 123 bpm . The whole thing was written in the key of G♯ major . The track is introduced by a melody played by a guitar. Fogelmark then sings the chorus, whereupon the first verse begins. Here for the first time there is a kick that sets the pace. The refrain follows without a pre-refrain. The bridge to the drop is comparatively shorter than in other productions by the duo. The drop sounds trendy, with a number of future house elements. The second stanza contains a pattern similar to the first. However, this is followed by a pre-refrain, which stands out atmospherically. The bridge between the identical verse and chorus in the first part is longer. The outro is like the intro.

In the song, the lyrical self tries to make it clear to another person that they are special. It tells how he would have noticed it for the first time and in the second stanza lists the decisive arguments. In the pre-refrain a situation follows that suggests a romantic relationship between the protagonists. Throughout the song, several requests are made by the lyric self to the sung person.

"I just need to get it off my chest
Yeah, more than you know
Yeah, more than you know
You should know that, baby, you're the best
Yeah, more than you know
Yeah, more than you know"

- Refrain, original excerpt

"I just have to get rid of it
Yeah, more than you know
Yeah, more than you know
You should know, baby, that you are the best
Yeah, more than you know
Yeah, more than you know"

- Refrain, translation

reception

criticism

The song received mostly positive feedback. On the one hand, it was praised for the positive mood and atmosphere and is also supposed to embody a style that Axwell Λ Ingrosso has not yet used. In this sense, it was also positively noted that their actual recognition value is not lost.

“For Axwell Λ Ingrosso, 'More Than You Know' is another step in a new direction. You can tell when listening that Axwell Λ Ingrosso were behind this track. From the vocals to the very own sound for the future house genre, everything is permeated with the typical sound of the Swedish duo. A very good song, which is also a perfect example of the new sound from Axwell Λ Ingrosso. "

- Patrick Butz : Dance Charts

In addition, the track had high chances of developing into a summer hit over the course of the summer . The reasons given were the trendy atmosphere, radio suitability and danceability.

“More Than You Know starts with the title track, which we will surely encounter in the upcoming festival sets. In the course of the summer it will probably develop into a strong summer anthem through the involvement of a pop audience and the simultaneously acting EDM character traits. Every part of the song is gripping in some way. Whether it's the guitars in the intro or the melody of the chorus, the mix will give you a week-long catchy tune. "

- Henry Popovic : Trapstyle

Commercial win

In the course of the summer the song entered the single charts of almost all Central European countries. Although it reached number two in the charts in Sweden in the second week, the song only entered number 72 two weeks after its release in Germany. On August 4th, it finally reached number two. After three weeks, the song pushed the summer hit Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee off the top of the chart. In Austria it reached number one a week earlier. The single was also in the top 10 in Belgium, Finland, Norway and Italy. Furthermore achieved More Than You Know the top position in the German airplay charts and also the chart peak in the German dance charts . In the dance charts, the single occupied the top position for 17 weeks straight, as long as no single before. The two DJs replaced Sugar ( Robin Schulz feat. Francesco Yates ), who at the time stayed in first place for 16 weeks. More Than You lost the record the following year to In My Mind ( Dynoro & Gigi D'Agostino ), which was at the top of this chart list for 26 weeks.

After only a few weeks, More Than You Know achieved record status in several countries . In Germany it was awarded a diamond in September 2019 for over one million units sold. This makes More Than You Know one of the best-selling singles in Germany . Awards in other countries followed. The song has sold over 2.3 million times worldwide.

Music video

Background and trivia

Director Nicolas Caeyers (2012)

The official music video was released on their YouTube channel on June 13, 2017 . It is part of a 12 minute and 20 second short film consisting of all four songs. The main role in the film is played by the Belgian actress and model Romi van Renterghem. The Belgian actor, director and film producer Nicolas Caeyers directed it. At his side was the designer Francesco Ragazzi, who commented on the project:

“As a medium, music is one of the most important elements of my work. With the opportunity to work with him on this project, a dream comes true for me. "

- Francesco Ragazzi : PressParty

The official music video reached over 51 million views within three months. In addition, it has been positively rated over half a million times. The short film for the EP received half a million views within a month. During the Tomorrowland 2017 live stream, Van Renterghem can also be seen in the front row, dressed in the same outfit she wears in the music video.

The short film has been available as a "Visual EP" since July 18, 2017 in several download portals.

At the same time as the release, an official music video for the Latin version of More Than You Know was released . Van Renterghem also acted as the protagonist here. The video is thematically structured similar to that of the original. However, Yatra and Cali & El Dandee can also be seen here. It has not yet been published on YouTube.

Topic and "The Movie"

The music video forms the beginning of the tetralogy . Format, image and camera work of the music video are based on the 1990s style and, according to "More Than You Know (The Movie)" , based on the found footage genre. The protagonist played by van Renterghem is accompanied by a friend over several days with a video camera. It starts with a short flashback that ends with a scene in her apartment. The first shot shows the bathroom door, on which the cover of the single is attached as a poster. She is surprised by the camera in the shower. She then gets ready for a night out, the goal of which is a concert by Axwell Λ Ingrosso. This is already signaled by their references to several other posters. After attending the concert, she joins a small group with whom she roams the streets, consumes alcohol, smokes cigarettes and finally uses other drugs. The whole thing leads to a rave that tempts them to engage in, among other things, physical and sexual acts. Furthermore, she loses control of herself. The tub in which Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso are lying on the cover can also be seen in one scene. In the end she finds her way out when the sun is already rising and the battery of the video camera gives up its ghost.

There are fundamental differences to the corresponding part from the short film. So the entire part she is in at the concert was only added to the music video. In the short film, the story of the rave is described in more detail. The preheating, the tour through the city district, but also the effects of drug consumption are shown more clearly. It also becomes clear that the end of the music video is not the actual end of the short film, which makes it clearer that she regrets the night and goes to her head. Several short sequences also show that the material would be damaged and incomplete.
