Life

Daddy Yankee 2019

Daddy Yankee has been active in the music industry since the early 1990s and has supported Reggaeton in its development phase. His father was a member of a salsa music group and his mother a teacher.

In school he was interested in baseball . At the age of 17, Ramón was shot as a bystander in a gang shootout. The shot hit his leg and hampered him for a long time. His baseball career was over. From then on he devoted his interest to his second great passion, music . He decided to become a reggaetón artist and from then on moved from block to block with DJ Playero . He was featured on numerous Playero mixtapes, and in 1997 he first appeared internationally with the song Posición on the soundtrack for One Tough Cop .

Daddy Yankee has been known in Puerto Rico since the mid-1990s, and each of his five albums has achieved platinum status. With Cójela que va sin jockey (feat. Glory ) he was represented in 2003 on the award-winning album "DJ Nelson presenta Luny Tunes y Noriega - Más flow". With the song Gasolina (produced by Luny Tunes and distributed by Jack White ) Daddy Yankee made the international breakthrough. His Barrio fino album sold a million times in the United States.

Nevertheless, Daddy Yankee also devoted himself to other projects, such as the lead role in the film Talento de barrio . He also has his own record company called El Cartel Records and his own Reebok sneaker collection. In 2010 he played himself in the American soap opera Rich and Beautiful and sang his hit Pose there .

In Puerto Rico, Daddy Yankee is now considered an integral part of reggaeton and its driving force - not only because he sells his albums millions of times; in his home country he was also named “Role Model of the Year”.

He then released several successful albums and songs that are not only known in the reggaeton scene. In particular, the song Gasolina from 2004 developed into one of the most successful reggae and Latin pop songs of all time.

In spring 2017, Yankee achieved a worldwide hit with the single Despacito together with Luis Fonsi and reached top 10 positions in numerous European countries as well as number one in the German , Austrian , Swiss , Italian and Spanish music charts . The official music video also became the first video released on the YouTube platform in 2017 to hit four billion views. Since August 2017, the summer hit Despacito has been the most viewed video on YouTube with over 6 billion views , replacing the music video for See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth .

On February 2, 2018, Yankee released the song Azukita , which was created in collaboration with the American DJ and producer Steve Aoki , the Puerto Rican Latin musician Elvis Crespo and the American and producer duo Play-N-Skillz . They incorporated both Latin-Pop and Big Room elements into the track.
