Elvis Crespo
Elvis Crespo (born July 30, 1971 in New York City ) as Elvis Crespo Diaz is a Puerto Rican singer and merengue musician who was awarded a Grammy in 1999 .
Life and musical career
Elvis Crespo was born in New York and was named after Elvis Presley . At the age of six his mother moved with him to Guaynabo , Puerto Rico , where he grew up.
In 1988, at the age of 17, he decided to return to New York. He became a member of the "Willie Berrios Orchestra" and a little later in the merengue band of Toño Rosario . He also enrolled at Metropolitan University as a business student. In 1991 Crespo married Ana Ceruto. He has a son with her: Elvis Francisco (* 1992). In 1994 he got the opportunity to become lead singer in the "Grupo Manía". He gave up his studies and from then on devoted himself entirely to music. This enabled him to greatly refine his musical skills.
After three albums together with Grupo Manía, which also had some success, Crespo received an offer from Sony Music to start a solo career. With his debut album Suavemente in 1998 he immediately had an international breakthrough. He was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Tropical Music Album". The title track was covered in 2004 by the German techno band Scooter . Due to the success of the album, there were also various collaborations. Among other things, he sang a duet with Milly Quezada, the "Reina del Merengue". With their joint title Para darte mi vida they entered the music competition “Premio Lo Nuestro” in Miami in the category “Duo Tropical del Año”.
The second album Píntame (1999) was able to build on the success. Crespo received another Grammy nomination and won the Grammy Latino for Best Merengue Album.
He then went on tour and there followed numerous appearances at music festivals throughout Latin America. At the end of 1999 a remix album with his most famous songs was released. Then the duet with Gizelle D'Cole Come Baby Come appeared . A European tour followed in the spring of 2000, visiting Spain, Italy and Belgium.
The album Wow! Flash became a commercial flop. It was only with Urbano in 2002 that Crespo had significantly more success again, especially with the titles Ojos negros and Besame en la boca .
The album Saboréalo was released in 2004. The gap between its releases has grown longer since then. Crespo explained this with emotional turbulence after his unexpectedly great success. In particular, he is said to have had numerous affairs. He has three illegitimate children from three different women, after which his wife urged him to have a vasectomy . The couple later separated. On March 16, 2009 he married his longtime manager Maribel Vega with whom he had a daughter a little later.
In 2016 the DJ Deorro released the single Bailar for which Crespo contributed the vocals. With this title Crespo reached the German single charts for the first time. In 2017 Elvis Crespo caused a sensation with the music video for Guayo , which stayed at the top of the charts for five weeks.
On February 2, 2018, Crespo released the song Azukita , which was created in collaboration with the American DJ and producer Steve Aoki , the Puerto Rican Latin rapper Daddy Yankee and the American and producer duo Play-N-Skillz . They incorporated both Latin-Pop and Big Room elements into the track.
Style and meaning
Elvis Crespo is one of the most prominent representatives of the merengue , who made the style popular far beyond the Caribbean.
His voice and his style of music are clearly recognizable . Its trademark is the exclamation “Pequeña, echate pa'ca!”. His musical work includes a number of popular and danceable merengue pieces in addition to some hits.
In the field of salsa , Crespo drew attention to himself on his album Píntame with the title Eres tu . The salsa duet with Eddie Santiago , a remake of the title Me haces falta , was released on Celebración (1999).
In 2004 the German techno troupe Scooter released a cover version of its title Suavemente .
