Azukita (intentional misspelling of the word "Azuquita"; Spanish for "sugar") is a song by US DJ and producer Steve Aoki in collaboration with Puerto Rican musicians Daddy Yankee and Elvis Crespo and the US producer duo Play -N skillz. The song, influenced by Latin pop and big room , was released on February 2, 2018 via Ultra Music and LLC.

background

Steve Aoki, the main interpreter of the song

The title was both written and composed by Steven Hiroyuki Aoki, Elvis Diaz Crespo, Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez (Daddy Yankee), Juan Salinas and Oscar Salinas (Play-N-Skillz). In addition to these, the Chicago-based DJ and producer David Alberto Marcias, who had previously worked with Play-N-Skillz, and Crespo's wife and manager Maribel Vega Laguna also appeared as authors. The " Warner Music Group " with its imprints "Neue Welt Musikverlag" and "WB Music" acted primarily as sub-publishers and original publishers . “ Ultra Records ”, “LLC” and Aoki's own label “Pillowface Publishing” took part in the publication itself . With Play-N-Skillz using their own label “Play for Play-N-Skillz-Music”, the “ EMI Group ” was also responsible for the release.

Steve Aoki has already given several awards to deal with Latin American music; He emphasized several times that he followed the music of artists such as Daddy Yankee, J Balvin and Bad Bunny. He came into contact with the genre of music in particular through the remix he produced for J Balvin's Mi gente . At the Latin Grammys 2017 he appeared with Balvin and Bad Bunny.

Play-N-Skillz said in an interview with Billboard that they had been in contact with Aoki for a long time and together they produced the first drafts of a Latin-inspired track. Daddy Yankee was also in the studio for a recording session of the duo and a press representative also announced Elvis Crespo's appearance. The brothers then approached Yankee and suggested that he start a collaboration. They then contacted Steve Aoki via Facetime and intercepted Crespo. The aim should have been to combine crespos and Yankees vocals with Aoki's EDM elements. The song should be finished within a few hours.

In mid-November 2017, Steve Aoki officially announced the collaboration with Daddy Yankee and the title in an interview with Empo TV. At the same time, he published pictures and clips from the music video shoot on Instagram , during which parts of the song could also be heard.

On January 30, 2018, he announced the release of Azukita for February 2, 2018 on his social media platforms .

Content and music

The song is based on a 4/4 time signature and the tempo is 130 bpm . The track is introduced by a catchy kick, which is accompanied by vocal shouts. The names of the artists are alluded to. With a short use on drums, the first verse of the song begins, in which Crespo can be heard. He is accompanied by a piano and a repeating clap. This is followed by a bridge that consists of a kick sounding once per measure and Daddy Yankee's voice. The drop then sounds in the big room pattern. After the drop, the refrain is used for the first time, which Crespo and Yankee take over together. The completion of another run of Bridge and Drop is followed by a rap part by Daddy Yankee. Then the bridge, the drop and the chorus can be heard one last time.

In terms of content, the song aims to broadcast a selection of female characters. The lyrical self emphasizes several times that it does not matter what skin or hair color they have. The charisma and the women themselves are metaphorically referred to as "sugar".

“La morena tiene algo
Que me llena de sabor.
Y esa blanquita tiene algo
Que me arranca el descontrol.
Lady una de azúcar!
Lady dos de azúcar!
Lady tres de azúcar!
Blanca y morena, blanca y morena! "

- First stanza & pre-drop, original excerpt

“The brunette has something that
fills me with taste.
And this blonde has something that
makes me lose control.
Give a lump of sugar!
Give two pieces of sugar!
Give three pieces of sugar!
Blonde and brunette, blonde and brunette! "

- First verse & pre-drop, translation

reception

The song received mostly positive reviews. In particular, the merging of the different musical styles of Daddy Yankee's Latin Pop and Steve Aoki's big room sound was praised. Erik Mahal from the online magazine "EDM Sauce" mentioned a similarity to Aoki's 2013 single Boneless , but gave the song a hit potential due to the name.

“The track is energetic and catchy. When the drop sets in, it is reminiscent of “Boneless”. Traditional Hispanic musical elements are highlighted throughout the song. All in all, it's a fun piece that will definitely have some success due to the high profile collaboration. Maybe, just maybe, that will keep people from connecting Daddy Yankee to 'Gasolina' right away, but probably not. "
