Ultra Records is an American independent label . It specializes in electronic music , especially electronic dance music . The company presents itself as part of the Ultra Music brand . Ultra Music pioneered the mainstream success of electronic dance music by pushing David Guetta and Calvin Harris to the radio stations, for example . The label's top acts in 2016 are artists like Omi and Kygo .

history

Ultra Records was founded in 1995 in New York City by Patrick Moxey , a former manager of Polygram and Virgin Records . Moxey had been in the dance scene in Chicago since the 1980s, and dropped out of New York University's film school after a week in 1987 to work full-time as a DJ. Ultra Music's first release was a 12-inch vinyl by New York DJ Roger Sanchez that Moxey produced with $ 8,000 on loan.

Other branches of the company (Ultra International Music Publishing, Empire Artist Management, Ultra Music Library) were later introduced and combined under the Ultra Music brand. The music company is headquartered in New York City and has offices in Toronto , Los Angeles and London . Ultra made its name in the 1990s with compilation albums like Ultra Dance and Ultra.chilled .

In 2006 Ultra Records joined the Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA), an independent media division of the Warner Music Group . Ultra Records' sub-label Sequence Records ( reggae ) and Escondida Records ( world music ) were included in the contract.

In January 2013, Ultra Music entered into a strategic alliance with Sony Music Entertainment . Sony bought 50% of Ultra. As part of the cooperation, Ultra can fall back on Sony's infrastructure for sales and advertising. In addition, Sony Music provided pieces from its dance music catalog that Ultra Music can include in its compilation series . Under the terms of the agreement, Patrick Moxey was given the newly created position of President of Sony Music Entertainment's Electronic Music Division reporting directly to CEO Doug Morris .

Publications

The label has released over 10,000 records since its inception, with a focus on compilations and singles . The focus is now on publishing on streaming platforms and on YouTube. The focus has completely changed from albums and compilations to singles. The label often brings together producers and DJs who remix a song and then releases it. Examples are Robin Schulz, whose remix of the Mr. Probz song Waves was number 1 in the charts in several European countries, or Felix Jaehn whose remix of the Omi song Cheerleader was a worldwide chart success .

It also operates a popular YouTube channel. In 2011 it achieved more than 100 million views a month for the first time and a total of over 1.3 billion views, which made it the fifth most successful music channel ever. By the beginning of 2016, Ultra had published 2000 videos on Youtube that had a total of 4 billion views. Individual artists like Kygo had over a billion streams on Spotify in 2015 alone .
