Lothar Eckhart

Lothar Eckhart (born July 11, 1918 in Znaim , † December 19, 1990 in Vienna ) was an Austrian archaeologist from the Roman provincial .

Life

Lothar Eckhart studied Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna . He wrote his dissertation on the representation of columns on Greek vases with Camillo Praschniker . Shortly after receiving his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1951 he got a job at the excavation project in Lauriacum , which had started a few months earlier. As a result of this activity, Eckhart's research focus shifted to provincial Roman archeology. From 1956 Eckhart worked at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz , where he was in charge of the prehistoric and early historical collections. When these collections were divided up in 1963, Eckhart was appointed head of the Department for Roman Era and Early Christianity. He stayed in this position until his retirement at the end of 1983; in the previous year, 1982, the University of Vienna had appointed him honorary professor for Roman provincial archeology. Eckhart led several archaeological excavations until his death (in addition to Lauriacum especially in Lorch and Schlögen ) and through his excavation reports made a significant contribution to the knowledge of the Roman settlement of Austria. For the Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani (CSIR) he wrote two volumes on the sculptures by Lauriacum and Ovilava.
