Marshmello (born May 19, 1992 ; real name Christopher Comstock ) is an American music producer and DJ who works in the fields of future bass and trap . He gained attention in particular because of his unusual appearance in his costume, and in combination with the secrecy of his identity. At the beginning of his career he also represented the future bass style, which was very popular at the time, which earned him strong support from well-known musicians such as Skrillex and Martin Garrix .

Identity and public appearance

Marshmello's identity has not yet been confirmed by himself. In his appearances, in his music videos as well as in his social networks, he hides his identity under a mask. The mask of the costume consists of a cylindrical helmet on which a smiley face can be seen and is based on the sweet marshmallow , which is decisive for its pseudonym. Because of the masking, he was fundamentally anonymous for a long time.

It was assumed early on that the American DJ and producer Chris Comstock, also known as Dotcom, was behind the pseudonym. Arguments for this were that they probably had the same first name, birthday and the same tattoos. Most recently, producer Feed Me posted a video on Instagram of him wearing Marshmello's helmet while Chris Comstock accidentally held the camera briefly on a mirror. Marshmello himself said about the anonymity: "Just enjoy the music, don't worry about me", in German "Just enjoy the music, don't worry about me."

In November 2017, the Scottish magazine Forbes presented the identity of Marshmello as a fact. In addition to the already known arguments, it was also disclosed that the real name was deposited with ASCAP and the BMI , as well as the company register of the state of Delaware .

Musical career

2015: First attention & "Joytime Collective"

On March 3, 2015, Marshmello made his debut with his song WaVeZ , which he uploaded to his SoundCloud profile. More songs followed at shorter and shorter intervals. All of them were based on a spelling similar to his debut in that the letters were arbitrarily capitalized and lowercase. He also released a number of remixes, including a remix for the title Where Are Ü Now by the DJ duo Jack Ü together with Justin Bieber . The Jack Ü member Skrillex became aware of him and shared his production Find Me on his SoundCloud page. Early support from musicians like Jauz or Sikdope followed.

With the motto “Music for the Soul”, Marshmello founded the record label “Joytime Collective” in June 2015 to market his songs. The first release should be the song Invincible , for which he organized a singing competition because the previous recordings did not meet his expectations. The American singer Hype Turner won it. The song was released on SoundCloud and YouTube at the end of July 2015.

On October 24, 2015, the song Keep It Mello was released , which was created in collaboration with rapper Omar LinX. The track was uploaded from the YouTube support channel " Trap Nation " and was therefore able to achieve a large reach for the first time. The song was supposed to be the first pre-release single from his upcoming album. In December 2015 he released a future bass remix for the song Hello by British singer Adele . This was able to enjoy a lot of clicks on various music platforms and also received the attention of DJ greats such as Martin Garrix , Axwell Λ Ingrosso and Alesso .

Early to mid-2016: debut album

On January 8, 2016, Marshmello released his debut album Joytime on his own record label, which consists of ten tracks. After a short time it was able to enter the US iTunes charts and continued to rank in various categories, including number 5 on Billboard's top dance / electronic albums and 41 on the independent albums. The album was also very popular on Spotify. All individual tracks have so far reached over a million views, the tracks Keep It Mello and Summer have even exceeded the 15 million mark.

In April 2015, Marshmello uploaded the song Want U 2 on his SoundCloud channel. At that time, the track was still under the free download category, was first published by Marshmello on his YouTube channel at the end of the year and was then also part of the studio album. Together with the Dub - House -Newcomer Slushii he recorded the song early 2016 scratch. On February 14, 2016, the remix was released on the occasion of Valentine's Day as a second single. The last single from the album, the song Colors was released on March 11, 2016. At the same time, the track was also the last release on his record label "Joytime Collective".

Mid to late 2016: Global breakthrough with Alone

Marshmello at VELD 2016

Marshmello received a record deal with the Canadian record label Monstercat in spring 2016 . Alone got its first release on the label on May 13, 2016. It was able to advance to number 79 on the Billboard Canadian and 93 on the US Hot 100 . On June 3, 2016, it was announced that there would be a remix competition for the song. The winner would have the opportunity to publish his remix on the label and play an opening set at Camp Bisco. The future house duo MRVLZ won the competition. In April 2016, the official music video for Keep It Mello was released on Trap Nation's YouTube channel and garnered over 100 million views in just a few months.

On June 19, 2016, Marshmello performed at EDC 2016 in Las Vegas. It was announced there that he would reveal his identity. However, under the mask was Tiësto . The fans and the media attributed this to a publicity stunt because, on the one hand, the tour dates were different and a photo of the two in full gear with the subtitle " The two masked DJs hang out before the show " was uploaded.

On July 2, 2016, he released the official music video for Alone on YouTube, which reached over 100 million views in just three months. On August 20, 2016, he announced the Marshmello Ritual Tour on Twitter. As part of this he toured between September 30, 2016 and January 21, 2017 through countries such as the USA, China, South Korea, India and Paraguay.

On October 27, 2016, he released his first single, Ritual, on Skrillex 's record label "OWSLA", which was recorded with the US singer-songwriter Stephen Wrabel. The official music video also had over 10 million views in just two months. This was followed by the songs Magic with bass house DJ Jauz and Freal Luv with the rapper trio Far East Movement , rapper Chanyeol and singer Tinashe, which had long been pushed into the background . Both move slightly away from his typical future bass style and embody more aggressive trap elements.

2017: Summer & Chasing Colors

Despite the release on the Joytime album over a year ago , a music video entitled Summer was released on January 9, 2017 . This was able to surpass the success of its predecessor in terms of click and stream technology and counted over 20 million views after just two weeks. This is in addition Marshmello the Venezuelan lifestyle - Blog clotting Lele Pons to see.

An initially unreleased track with trap producer Ookay has been buzzing through the Internet for several months. It was finally released as a single on February 24, 2017. The title was Chasing Colors and featured vocals from US singer and actress Noah Cyrus , sister of Miley Cyrus . A music video has not yet been released.

On March 17, 2017, Marshmello released the song Twinbow in collaboration with Slushii . On May 5, 2017, he released the song Movin On in parallel with the official music video. The title received very positive feedback for its strong focus on the bassline.

The song Silence was released in the summer of 2017 . This was created in cooperation with the American singer Khalid , who already celebrated a single chart success with Calvin Harris and Future in the spring . The track, which is based on a calm atmosphere, managed to enter the charts of several European countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as Great Britain and the USA. In over 15 countries, Marshmello entered the top 10 and Silence has around 2 million sales .

He followed up with the non-commercial single You & Me in October 2017 . For the punk-influenced song, he sang the vocals himself for the first time. At the end of the same month, the Silence Follow-Up Wolves followed , which he recorded together with the American singer and actress Selena Gomez . Marshmello announced the collaboration back in July 2017 while congratulating Gomez on Twitter. With top 10 placements in over 25 countries, including one number one, Wolves was able to surpass the success of its predecessor. On November 19, 2017, they performed together at the 2017 American Music Awards .

Even before the official Wolves music video was released, a music video for the album track Blocks from the previous year was released.

In December 2017 he contributed the song Danger to the soundtrack of the Netflix film Bright . This was created in collaboration with the US rapper trio Migos and lets Marshmello gain a foothold in hip-hop for the first time; so the song contains almost no traits of his future bass style. In the US singles charts, Danger was able to enter despite no single release.

2018: Joytime II, number one with Anne-Marie and other successful collaborations

Marshmello receives the Remix Award in the Music Lounge

On January 12th, 2018 Marshmello released the song Spotlight , which, like its predecessor, was very hip-hop-heavy. The track was created in collaboration with the US rapper Lil Peep . Due to the death of Lil Peep in November of the previous year, the release was controversial. According to his own information, the collaboration was already completed at this point, but he would not have intended to initiate the release of the song. Peep's mother insisted on the release, which is why Marshmello scheduled it for January 2018. In the UK and Austria, among others, the song advanced to the singles charts.

Together with Slushii, the song There x2 was released as a single on February 1, 2018 . As in October of the previous year, Marshmello acted as a singer and was listed as a featuring artist on There x2 .

A week later followed the song Friends , which was created in collaboration with the British singer Anne-Marie . Friends developed into a commercial success that followed on from Wolves' last year. The song attracted attention in particular with its text and the official music video, which deal with the problem of the friend zone . In Germany, Austria and Great Britain, among others, the single reached the top 10. It is part of Anne-Marie's debut studio album, Speak Your Mind .

The song Everyday was released on March 2, 2018 . This was produced together with the US rapper Logic and passed Friends in the US singles charts . The following week the song Fly , sung by Leah Culver, was released. The non-commercial single was part of Marshmello's sets last year.

The song You Can Cry followed in May 2018. He worked with the singer James Arthur and the rapper Juicy J together. Similar to Everyday, the track is hip-hop-heavy and only reached a single chart position in the UK. His second studio album followed in June 2018, which is stylistically not commercially designed, but follows on from Marshmello's debut album Joytime , which is also indicated by the corresponding title Joytime II . The LP reached a position in the US album charts. With the songs Tell Me and Check This Out , two songs from the album were released as a single.

On August 17, 2018, the single Happier was released , which was produced in collaboration with the British indie rock band Bastille . The song made it into the singles charts of several European countries, as well as the USA and Australia. This song was in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, making Happier Marshmello's first song to do so. After this song he released the song Project Dreams with Roddy Rich with the accompanying video.

2019: Joytime III

Marshmello during a concert in Washington in 2019

On February 1, 2019, the song BIBA , which is sung by Pritam and Shirley Setia in the Hindu language, was released. A week later, the dubstep song Sell Out followed , which was produced together with the US DJ and producer Svdden Death.

On March 8, 2019, the song Here with Me was released , which was created in collaboration with the Scottish synthpop band Chvrches . The official music video followed in April 2019. In Great Britain, Scotland and Denmark, among others, the song advanced to the top 10. On April 3, 2019, Marshmello performed with Chvrches and the song on the US TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on.

On April 25, 2019, Marshmello released the hip-hop track Light It Up , the vocals of which were contributed by US rappers Tyga and Chris Brown . Criticism of the collaboration with Brown and Tyga, expressed by the band Chvrches, sparked an argument on the Internet platform Instagram . The band wrote that they were "very disappointed" that he "chose to work with people who were predators and perpetrators," "publicly apologize for their behavior and ultimately endorse it." While Marshmello himself Did not comment on the criticism, Tyga wrote that “everyone makes mistakes” and “nobody is perfect”. Chris Brown described Chvrches as the kind of people he wished they'd "run in front of a speeding bus full of insane people." The song itself did not match the success of his pop releases. It occasionally reached number 90 in the home of the trio, as well as the midfield of the British, Hungarian and Australian singles charts.

On June 21, 2019, he released the song One Thing Right , which was created in collaboration with the American country musician Kane Brown . The EDM-Country-Fusion reached the top 10 of the Australian, New Zealand and US country charts. Brown himself described the song as a kind of opposite of Marshmello's song Happier . A future bass version of the song produced by the British duo Duke & Jones followed along with a number of other remixes in early August 2019. Their version of the track reached over 10 million views on YouTube.

At the beginning of July 2019, Marshmello's third studio album Joytime III was released , for which he collaborated with Slushii, Flux Pavilion and Wiwek, among others . The song Rescue Me , which was recorded together with the American band A Day to Remember , was released as the first single. In June 2019, the song Room to Fall with the British DJ Flux Pavilion and the American electro-pop musician Elohim followed as the second single from the album.

Media presence

The appearance in costume and mask also attracted a lot of attention away from the stage. In the course of 2017 and 2018 he became more and more active, especially on social networks such as YouTube and Instagram . On October 31, 2017, he started the satirical format “Cooking with Marshmello” on YouTube , in which he shared cooking tutorials in costumes . The chocolate mice baked in the first episode served as an answer to a social media dispute between the two producers started by Deadmau5 .

At the beginning of June 2018, Marshmello started a gameplay format on YouTube. He met Tyler Blevins alias Ninja , a US American Twitch and YouTube Let's Player . Together they dueled in the battle royale video game Fortnite . Weekly Let's Plays followed with different YouTubers and different games. Later in 2018 a cooperation with the game developer started and the player was given the opportunity to choose the marshmello costume as an outfit. He also appeared in the game world with a live set in early February 2019. The set was released as a mix album.

On September 9, 2018, Marshmello appeared in the US version of the television show " Ninja Warrior ". He had to complete a course in his costume.

At a WWE event ( WWE Friday Night SmackDown ) on October 4, 2019, he was allowed to win and briefly hold the WWE 24/7 Championship from Carmella , only to give it back to Carmella that evening.
