MONSTERCAT is a Canadian independent label in the field of electronic dance music , which is headquartered in Vancouver is. The net label was founded on June 11, 2011 by Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen.
Label program
Monstercat is not a classical music label . It mostly brings out digital publications and is increasingly focused on streaming music.
The artist retains complete control over the copyright and may offer the published songs to other labels. Together with the compilation Monstercat 018 - Frontier (August 6, 2014) the “Monstercat Manifesto” was published in which the label declares that they consider the old copyrights to be antiquated and outdated. Instead, encourage people to share and remix music. Bootleging and unauthorized remixing are no problem for the label .
The artists' publications appear on their own website, iTunes , Xbox Music , Spotify , Deezer , SoundCloud , Bandcamp , Google Play Music , Apple Music and Beatport , among others . Videos appear on Twitch and YouTube .
The main business of the label, however, is the different samplers . The label releases new songs every Monday and Thursday (Monstercat: Uncaged) and every Tuesday and Friday (Monstercat: Instinct). In addition, on Wednesdays appears podcast on Twitch.tv . A new sampler is released about every 40 songs or every three to four months.
history
In July 2011 Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen launched Monstercat as a YouTube channel. Darlington and Paunonen started a series of samplers to give artists both a chance to publish and to minimize competition among artists. The first song was Dubstep Killed Rock 'n' Roll by Ephixa, the first sampler was released on July 7, 2011 with seven songs by the artists Feint, Halo Nova (today: Varien), Stephen Walking, Ephixa, Neilio, Arion and Going Quantum. Initially only intended as a platform for befriended bands and artists, the label developed a life of its own.
In December 2011, Krewella , an American EDM group from Chicago , Illinois, signed with Monstercat. The first song was Killin 'It and thus the first own piece that the group had ever released on a label. Monstercat launched a social media campaign and collaborated with numerous EDM YouTube channels to promote Krewella. Her second song, This Is Not The End , a collaboration with Pegboard Nerds , was released on Monstercat in September 2013 and later, on Columbia Records , as part of their first album, Get Wet . In 2012 the label reached the iTunes charts for the first time with its seventh compilation. Fans had started a campaign called Operation Dethroned to raise the compilation to number 1 on the iTunes charts. A YouTube video appeared with a black cat that later became the inspiration for the label's logo. Other albums also reached number 1 on the iTunes dance charts and high positions on Beatport.
In June 2014, the label sold its one millionth album in the United States. In July 2014, the label funded its first tour with Pegboard Nerds, Stephen Walking and Varien. The label let fans vote where the artists should perform. 20 appointments came about. In September, on the occasion of the label's third birthday, a mix of 78 songs, created by Didrick, was released. In December of the same year, a dedicated digital 24-hour radio channel was published on Twitch.TV.
Monstercat launched a new channel called "Monstercat: Instinct" in 2018. This focuses on melodic, emotional songs and their main channel Monstercat is now called "Monstercat: Uncaged". On this channel you can find more vibrant, energetic songs. Since the musical genres were separated, the release days of the songs have also been changed. On Mondays and Thursdays, songs are published on Uncaged, on Tuesday and Friday on Instinct and on Wednesday a new podcast "Call Of The Wild" (short: COTW) comes on Twitch.TV
