final
August 29, 2015, 8:45 pm local time (2:45 pm CEST )
The race came down to a duel between Jamaica and the USA. These two nations had had the best individual sprinters for many years. The US team won the last Olympic Games with a world record , and Jamaica was ahead at the last World Championships . The battle for bronze was also open. The European champions from Great Britain as well as the teams from Trinidad and Tobago and the Netherlands who were convincing in the heats - each with national records - started promisingly.
The following line-up changes were made for the finale:
- Jamaica - Veronica Campbell-Brown ran for Sherone Simpson, Elaine Thompson for Kerron Stewart.
- Trinidad and Tobago - Khalifa St. Fort has been replaced by Semoy Hackett.
- Great Britain - Dina Asher-Smith ran for Bianca Williams.
- Russia - Anna Kukuschkina replaced Ekaterina Smirnova.
In the final, the USA and Jamaica were pretty tied after 200 meters. The Dutch women with Dafne Schippers as the second runner were also still very good in the race. In the finish curve, the Jamaican Elaine Thompson ran very well and passed the baton to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce with a clear lead over her opponents. The American Jasmine Todd was in second place and had no chance against the Jamaican in the final section. Jamaica defended the 2013 world championship, while the Americans won silver. Behind them, the relay from Trinidad and Tobago won the bronze medal just ahead of the British. The Netherlands crossed the finish line fifth, but the relay was disqualified after the race due to a faulty replacement. Germany finished fifth ahead of Canada. The Russians lost the baton at the first change and could not finish the race.
