final

August 10, 2012, 8:40 pm

The seasons of the United States and Jamaica were considered favorites, with the US seasons being given slight advantages.

The following line-up changes were made for the finale:

  • USA - Allyson Felix ran for Jeneba Tarmoh, Carmelita Jeter instead of Lauryn Williams.
  • Jamaica - Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce replaced Samantha Henry-Robinson, Veronica Campbell-Brown replaced Schillonie Calvert.

Jamaica's starting runner, 100-meter Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce - running on lane 6 - was able to compensate for a small part of the curve set by the USA, which started on lane 7. But on the back straight, US runner Allyson Felix ran so well that her team was now ahead. In the second corner, Veronica Campbell-Brown brought Jamaica a little closer, but the final runner in the USA, Carmelita Jeter, was still two meters ahead. Jeter sprinted to the finish line, the US relay team was the first team ever to achieve a time under 41 seconds with 40.82 seconds. This broke the world record of the GDR squadron after 27 years. Silver went to Jamaica, whose time was only four hundredths of a second slower than the previous world record. The bronze medal went to the runners of Ukraine.

In the twentieth Olympic final, the US athletes won the tenth gold medal for their country.

For Ukraine it was the first medal win in the 4 x 100 meter relay .
