doping

The Russian squadron was 2016 victory disallowed because final leg Julija Tschermoschanskaja positively to Turinabol and stanozolol was tested as retests had surrendered.

The squadrons placed behind each moved up one rank. The damage to the Chinese relay, which would have qualified for the finals if the Russian result had been canceled, was irreparable.

Preliminary round

The sixteen relays qualified for the Olympics also included Cuba and Finland. Both associations decided not to send a team. The teams from Nigeria and Thailand that were not qualified at first moved up.

There were two preliminary runs, from which the first three and the two fastest seasons qualified for the final. The directly qualified teams are highlighted in light blue, the relays that have qualified over time are highlighted in light green.

In the final there were the following line-up changes compared to the preliminary stages:

  • Nigeria - Halimat Ismaila ran in place of Agnes Osazuwa.
  • Jamaica - Sherone Simpson replaced Sheri-Ann Brooks.
  • Poland - Marta Jeschke has been replaced by Joanna Kocielnik.

The athletes from Jamaica were clearly the favorites. In the 100-meter individual run, they had achieved a triple success. They also had the Olympic champion over 200 meters in their ranks. Jamaica had also triumphed four years earlier at the Athens Games . The only real rivals were in the USA team. The US runners had been ahead at the World Championships in both 2005 and 2007 , with Jamaica taking second place. For the bronze medal still remaining after this calculation, European champions Russia, vice European champions Great Britain and the third Belgian women in the World Cup came into question.

The expected duel for gold and silver could not take place in the expected form, however, as the US-Americans had not survived the preliminary round due to the loss of baton.

Teams from Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Jamaica, Great Britain, Nigeria and Poland contested the finals. In addition, there were the Russians who were disqualified in 2016 for doping fraud in their final runner.

The favored Jamaicans only led to the second change in the final. Then, like the British, they lost the baton. Both seasons gave up the race and did not finish. Since Poland was disqualified for crossing an exchange mark and Russia for violating the doping regulations, only four teams were ultimately considered.

The Belgians were already ahead at the last change and won Olympic gold by a clear margin. In doing so, they set a new national record. Nigeria crossed the finish line as the second team, five tenths of a second behind. Another tenth of a second back, Brazil won the bronze medal. The German relay reached fourth place.

The Belgian relay ran with their Olympic victory for the first medal win in their country over 4 times 100 meters .
