Starting position

There was a larger group of favorites for this competition. The Russian Denis Nischegorodow set a special mark in May of the Olympic season with his world record . In the previous year he had finished fourth at the World Championships and won the silver medal at the 2004 Games . The 2007 world champion Nathan Deakes from Australia was absent from this Olympic competition. In this top-class field, however, were the vice world champion and European champion Yohan Diniz from France, the world champion from 2005 Sergej Kirdjapkin, the two-time World Cup third in 2005 and 2007 Alex Schwazer from Italy, the Spanish vice European champion Jesús Ángel García, the Australian silver medalist over 20 km Jared Tallent, the Norwegian World Cup -Fünfte 2007 Erik Tysse and his compatriot Trond Nymark as WM -Vierter 2005, WM -Achter 2007 and EM -Vierter of 2006. the rail competition from Central and South America, however not as strong to be like a few years ago, when walkers from Mexico and Ecuador in particular were at the forefront in the battle for medals. The athletes from China and Japan, who had repeatedly performed very successfully at major championships, were difficult to assess.

Course of competition

August 22, 2008 , 9:30 a.m.

In the competition, a pace was set from the start that caused the field to fall apart very early. This was very astonishing given the difficult conditions under the Beijing air pollution. After just five kilometers, Schwazer and Diniz had a lead of almost ten seconds over a group of seven with Tallent, Nischegorodow, the Japanese Yuki Yamazaki, the Chinese Li Jianbo, the Mexican Jesús Sánchez, the Australian Adam Rutter and the Chinese Zhao Chengliang. But the pursuers now increased the pace once again significantly. They came up and a top group of seven formed, led by Nischegorodow. Rutter, Jianbo, Tallent, Schwazer, Yamazaki and Diniz were there. The walkers behind were already more than twenty seconds behind after ten kilometers. At fifteen kilometer the lead group consisted of only four walkers. Nischegerodow continued to lead at an even faster pace. With him were Li Jianbo, Schwazer and Tallent. Rutter had already given up here. Diniz in fifth was about nine seconds behind, all other competitors had fallen even more clearly. This situation at the top persisted even after twenty kilometers. Nischegorodow continued to apply a lot of pressure, the distance behind Diniz grew more and more.

In the further course the group of four stayed together for a long time, while Diniz could no longer keep the 9-second gap and fell further back. After thirty kilometers he was already almost two minutes behind the leaders and gave up the competition a little later. Between kilometers 35 and 40 a first preliminary decision was made with regard to the medals. Li Jianbo couldn't keep up with the high pace at the front and had to let go. It slacked off very clearly now and in the end fell back to fourth place. The question of the medal distribution now had to be resolved under the leadership trio alone.

The Italian took charge of the last ten kilometers. With five kilometers to go, Schwazer had worked out a lead of forty seconds over Tallent and Nischegerodow, which he kept increasing. The decision for silver was also made a little later, when Tallent was able to break away from his Russian competitor. Alex Schwazer finally became Olympic champion with a lead of 2:19 minutes over Jared Tallent, who after bronze over 20 km now secured silver in the 50 km distance . Third was Denis Nischegorodow, 53 s behind Tallent. With his winning time Schwazer improved the Olympic record of Vyacheslav Ivanenko, who started for the USSR in 1988, by 1:20 min. Jesús Ángel García came in fourth ahead of Erik Tysse. The Mexican Horacio Nava came in sixth ahead of the Japanese Yuki Yamazaki and the Polish Rafał Fedaczyński.
