Starting position

The favorites for this competition were mainly Europeans. The reigning world champion and vice European champion Olga Kaniskina came from Russia . The European and World Champion of 2005 Ryta Turowa from Belarus belonged to this narrow group of favorites as well as the Spanish World Cup third in 2007 and World Cup fourth in 2005 Maria Vasco, the Norwegian World Cup fourth in 2007 and EC fourth Kjersti Plätzer, who Portuguese Susana feitor as WM -Fünfte of 2007 World Cup -Third of 2005, and the Italian Elisa Rigaudo as WM -Siebte of 2005 European Championship -Third. The Greek Olympic champion from 2004 Athanasia Tsoumeleka was also among the participants. However, it was no longer in the shape of 2004.

Course of competition

August 21, 2008 , 9:00 a.m.

From the beginning, Kaniskina put pressure on the competition at high speed and pulled away early. After only two kilometers she was all alone in front with a lead of seventeen seconds in front of a larger group of pursuers, which became smaller and smaller as the course progressed. Kaniskina increased the distance to her opponents steadily. After eight kilometers she was leading a group of ten by just 41 seconds, which after ten kilometers shrank to seven walkers. Turawa, Vasco, the Chinese Liu Hong and Yang Mingxia, the Russian Tatjana Kalmykowa, Plätzer and Rigaudo were now 45 seconds behind. After another two very fast kilometers, this small group also fell apart. Turawa had withdrawn and even got a little closer to the leading Kaniskina. She was 41 seconds behind, Plätzer and Vasco followed twelve seconds behind Turawa. In the further course Kaniskina increased the gap again, while Turawa ran out of strength more and more. Finally, Plätzer and Vasco came up to the Belarusian again, who then fell back to eleventh place by the end of the game. After eighteen kilometers, Kaniskina was more than a minute ahead of Plätzer and Vasco. Rigaudo followed in fourth, just eleven seconds behind the first two pursuers. On the last two kilometers, the leading Russian could not be denied victory. With a lead of 36 seconds, Olga Kaniskina won the gold medal ahead of Kjersti Plätzer. Elisa Rigaudo took the bronze medal five seconds back, ahead of Liu Hong. Maria Vasco fell back to fifth place, Beatriz Pascual was sixth, ahead of Olive Loughnane from Ireland and Ana Cabecinha from Portugal. Athanasia Tsoumeleka finished ninth.

Olga Kaniskina improved Wang Liping's Olympic record from 2000 by more than two and a half minutes.

In addition, six new national records were set.
