Twelve athletes had qualified for the final. All had reached the qualification range. There were two Cubans and two Brits, as well as one participant each from the Bahamas, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Portugal, Romania, Russia and the Ukraine.

The favorites were primarily the reigning world champion and European championship fourth Nelson Évora from Portugal and the Brazilian vice world champion and Pan-American champion Jadel Gregório. Other medal candidates were the silver medalists of the Games of 2004 , the World Championship -Third 2005 and EM -Third Marian Oprea of Romania, the World Cup -Vierte of 2005 Central American / Caribbean champion Leevan Sands of the Bahamas and the British Championships -Sechste of 2007 and EM fifth Phillips Idowu.

In the final there were a few attempts far beyond the 17-meter mark in the first round. Idowu took the lead with 17.51 m in front of Évora with 17.31 m. The Cuban Arnie David Giralt jumped 17.27 m, Oprea 17.22 m. Gregório reach 17.14 m. The second lap continued with wide jumps. World champion Évora improved to 17.56 m and thus led the field. Giralt took second place with 17.52 m in front of Idowu, who was now third with his 17.51 m from round one.

The Briton countered in the next series of tests with 17.62 m and was back in front. Sands now intervened in the action. He pushed Évora from second place with 17.59 m. Before the final of the top eight, Giralt was still fourth with 17.52 m ahead of Oprea - 17.22 m. The British Onochie Achike was sixth with 17.17 m ahead of Gregório - 17.14 m.

But the decision was not yet made. In lap four Évora scored 17.67 m and was five inches ahead of Idowu. In the next two rounds there were still numerous jumps that were significantly further than seventeen meters. Except for Gregório, none of the athletes was able to improve their previously recorded distance. The Brazilian reached 17.20 m in his last jump, displacing Achike three centimeters from sixth place. With that, world champion Nelson Évora also became Olympic champion. Phillips Idowu only narrowly won the silver medal. He had jumped three inches further than bronze medalist Leevan Sands. Just another seven centimeters behind, Arnie David Giralt took fourth place in front of Marian Oprea, Jadel Gregório and Onochie Achike. All of them had passed the 17-meter mark.

Nelson Évora won the first gold medal for Portugal in the triple jump .
