initial situation

The world record holder Haile Gebrselassie, who would have started here as a favorite, preferred to compete over 10,000 meters in order to be able to compete in the Berlin Marathon again in autumn , in which he had set his world record last year and where it was a lot of money to earn. But of course there were other promising medal candidates. Among them were the reigning world champion Luke Kibet Bowen from Kenya, vice world champion Mubarak Hassan Shami from Qatar, the World Cup third and vice European champion Viktor Röthlin from Switzerland, the Moroccan world champion from 2005 Jaouad Gharib from Morocco, the World Cup fourth from 2007 Yared Asmerom Eritrea, the Japanese World Cup fifth from 2007 and World Cup third from 2005 Tsuyoshi Ogata as well as the Italian Olympic champion from 2004 and reigning European champion Stefano Baldini.

Race course

August 24, 2008 , 7:30 a.m.

In view of the poor external conditions in Beijing with air pollution and high temperatures, the race started early in the morning. Right from the start, this marathon was run at an unconditionally high pace. On the first two five-kilometer sections, the top athletes were faster than fifteen minutes and the two 5000-meter sections between kilometers fifteen and 25 were run in less than fifteen minutes. After that, these values were between 15:11 and 15:23 minutes, so they were still in a fast-running range.

The favorites already dominated the race for the first few kilometers. Above all, the Kenyans Wanjiru and Martin Kiptoo Lel as well as the Mexican José Manuel Martínez ensured a fast pace, so that a leading group soon formed, which reduced to nine runners after ten kilometers. These were the Mexicans Martínez, the Kenyans Wanjiru and Lel, the Ethiopians Deriba Merga and Tsegay Kebede, the Moroccans Gharib and Abderrahim Goumri and the Eritreans Asmerom and Yonas Kifle. After twenty kilometers, with Kifle, Wanjiru, Merga, Lel and Gharib, five runners remained in the group. World champion Kibet Bowen dropped out of the race after about 29 kilometers.

The race entered a decisive phase even before thirty kilometers. First, Wanjiru and Merga left alone. Gharib and Lel were about five seconds behind them while Kifle continued to fall behind. But Gharib caught up with the two leaders again, so that now a group of three with Wanjiru, Merga and Gharib was in front. Wanjiru continued to put pressure on the front and finally managed to break away from his two companions. His lead grew little by little, while now Merga also got problems. He lost touch with Gharib. At forty kilometers Wanjiru was eighteen seconds ahead of Gharib, Merga was now a further 1:35 minutes behind. Kebede followed behind, whose gap on Merga was 46 seconds. In the end, Samuel Kamau Wanjiru ran into the stadium cheering and won in 2:06:32 h. He undercut the Olympic record of the Portuguese Carlos Lopes from 1984 by 2:49 min. Jaouad Gharib finished second, 44 seconds behind, and won the silver medal. The increasingly declining Merga reached the stadium in third place, but was easily overtaken on the track by his compatriot Tsegay Kebede, who secured the bronze medal 3:28 minutes behind Wanjiru. Deriba Merga was able to hold his fourth place 21 seconds behind Merga with three seconds ahead of the fifth placed Martin Kiptoo Lel. As the best non-African, the Swiss Viktor Röthlin, who had divided the race very well, was eleven seconds behind Lel sixth in front of the Ethiopian Gashaw Asfaw and Yared Asmerom.
