José Manuel Martínez ( José Manuel Martínez Fernández, nickname "Chema" ; born October 22, 1971 in Madrid ) is a Spanish long-distance runner .

Career

Martínez won his first international title when he won the 10,000-meter run at the Universiade in 1999 . In 2002 he won the European Championships in Munich ahead of Dieter Baumann . Four years later he won the silver medal behind Jan Fitschen at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg .

At world championships he finished 19 ( 1999 in Seville ) and 12 ( 2001 in Edmonton ) over this distance . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he was ninth.

Martínez made his marathon debut in 2002 when he immediately finished third in the Rotterdam Marathon . The same placement he achieved there in 2003, and at the Marathon of the World Championships in Edmonton , he finished 16th. He also took part in the marathon at the next two world championships: in Helsinki in 2005 he came in 30th place, and in 2007 in Osaka he was tenth. Also in 2007 he finished second in the Rome Marathon , and the following year he won the Madrid Marathon and came in 16th in the marathon of the Olympic Games in Beijing . At the marathon of the World Championships in Berlin in 2009 , he finished eighth as the best European in 2:14:04 h. At the European Championships in Barcelona 2010 he won the silver medal in the same discipline behind the superior Viktor Röthlin .

At the first Wings for Life World Run on May 5, 2014, he covered the greatest distance of all participants in Barcelona with 55.56 km . In 2017 he won the race in Spain in Valencia with 66.25 km.

Martínez is 1.76 m tall and weighs 62 kg. He is married to the hockey player Nuria Moreno.
