On April 30, 1988, the dam of a sedimentation basin of a molybdenum mine broke in Jinduicheng in the Chinese province of Shaanxi . About 20 people died as a result of the resulting tidal wave .
The dam was 40 m high and stored 700,000 m³ of sedimentation sludge. The dam broke because a discharge from the overflow was blocked and the water level in the reservoir rose too high and overflowed uncontrollably. The water was acidic and so many fish were killed when Archie Creek was flooded.
