Bernardim Ribeiro

Bernardim Ribeiro (* 1482 in Torrão , † 1552 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet .

He was born in Torrao, Alentejo region and studied law in Lisbon (1507–1512). In 1524 he became the secretary of King John III. appointed by Portugal . In the last few years of his life he suffered from mental confusion.

He wrote the sensitive romance novel "Hystoria de menina e moça" (published in 1554, expanded version in 1557 under the title "Livro das saudades" ) , which was continued by another hand . Ribeiro was also significant as a poet. Portuguese pastoral poetry begins with his eclogues ( "Eclogas" , published in 1554) .
