Pyotr Grigoryevich Bolotnikov

Pyotr Grigoryevich Bolotnikov ( Russian Пётр Григорьевич Болотников , English transcription Pyotr Bolotnikov ; born March 8, 1930 in Zinovkino , Mordovian Autonomous Oblast ; †  December 20, 2013 ) was a Soviet long-distance runner .

Career

Bolotnikov did not begin athletics training until he was 20 years old when he was serving in the Red Army . He was the first national champion over 10,000 meters in 1957 when he surprisingly defeated the great Volodymyr Kuz . Bolotnikow was between 1958 and 1962 each double Soviet champion over 5000 and 10,000 meters. In 1964 he was again champion over 10,000 meters.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he was ninth over 5000 meters and came over 10,000 meters in 16th place. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Bolotnikow controlled the 10,000 meter race from the start and won by five seconds. In the same year Bolotnikow improved the world record over 10,000 meters by almost twelve seconds and ran a time of 28: 18.8 minutes. Because of these achievements, he received the Order of Lenin .

In 1962 Bolotnikow improved his own world record by six tenths of a second to 28: 18.2 minutes. At the European Championships in Belgrade he lived up to his role as a favorite and won the 10,000 meter race by a large margin. In the 5000 meter run, he unexpectedly only came third.

The 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo were disappointing for Bolotnikov with a 25th place over 10,000 meters. A year later he announced his resignation.
