António Pinto (athlete)

António Pinto (born March 22, 1966 in Vila Garcia near Amarante ) is a former Portuguese long-distance runner .

At the European Championships in Budapest in 1998 he won the gold medal in the 10,000-meter run in 27: 48.62 minutes , at the 1999 World Championships in Seville he was fifth over the same distance, after having previously won 27: 12.47 minutes this year had set a European record.

In 1994 he won the Berlin Marathon and in 1992, 1997 and 2000 the London Marathon , most recently with the European marathon record of 2:06:36 minutes, which Kaan Kigen Özbilen only undercut in 2016 . 2000 he reached the 11th place in the Olympic marathon his best finish at the Olympics, having already in 1988 number 13 in the 10,000-meter race and in 1996 had occupied 14th place in the marathon.

In 2002 he retired from international competitive sport and now runs a winery near Porto .
